Cleethorpes Town 6 Lincoln United Reserves 0

Cleethorpes Town eased to another convincing league victory on Saturday afternoon, beating Lincoln United Reserves 6-0 at the Stamford Club in a match sponsored by Linden Homes and BJB Lift Trucks.

Jonathan Oglesby scored two for the Owls while frontmen Luke Todd and Ricky Belding also found the back of the net.

Callum Day marked his first Cleethorpes Town start with a goal while defender Matthew Coleman also got on the score sheet for the second time in two weeks.

There were four changes to the Cleethorpes starting line-up, with Oglesby, Todd and Renzie Lobendhan recalled. Day was handed a first start since his move from CGB Humbertherm last month – he started on the right wing.

Andy Liddell’s side made all the early running, with Day shaving the crossbar with a rocket of a free-kick from 25 yards out after only six minutes.

It was little surprise that the deadlock was broken soon after. Belding broke down the right before squaring the ball across goal for a grateful Oglesby to tap into an empty net.

It could have been two just a minute after, when Richard Peck’s header from the halfway line found an unmarked Todd, but the striker sliced his shot wide.

Belding was left furious when Matt Kingett blocked his shot on the line after 26 minutes. The prolific Owls man believed the defender handled the ball but the referee was disagreed.

An audacious 45-yard chip from Lobendhan went just over and Belding stepped on the ball when in on goal as Cleethorpes looked to make their dominance count in the latter stages of the second half.

They were nearly made to pay as the end of the first half approached. Drury came rushing out of his goal to snuff out a chance for the away side, but the ball fell to Luke Shipman. His goalbound effort was about to sneak in when the agile Coleman hooked the ball away on the line.

There was still time for Oglesby to shoot over from inside the area but the teams went in at half time with the score still at 1-0.

The home side were much more clinical with their finishing in the second period. Todd smashed the ball low and in after a goalmouth scramble in the opening stages of the half before Callum Day effectively ended the game as a contest after 53 minutes – his right-footed drive making it 3-0.

The fourth goal was a beauty from Oglesby and came just before the hour mark. Todd sent the ball to his left to find the tricky winger, who cut inside to send a dipping effort past Clifford in the Whites goal.

United’s Lloyd Freeman and Cleethorpes’ Reece Newell both saw red for violent conduct but the goals continued to flow. Clifford saved from Neul and Todd but Coleman was on hand to tuck the ball away and add a fifth for Cleethorpes after 69 minutes.

Lobendhan then showed some nifty footwork, jinking past two midfielders before floating an exquisite pass with the outside of his right boot into the path of Belding, who rounded the keeper and made it six.

Oglesby, who impressed throughout, had to be substituted in the final stages after picking up an injury, but that was the only downside to another impressive Owls performance.

The win extends Cleethorpes’ lead at the top of the Lincolnshire League to 13 points. The Owls travel to Hykeham Town next Saturday.
