Cleethorpes Town 5 Nettleham 2

Cleethorpes Town ensured they would finish the calendar year without a league defeat with a 5-2 win over Nettleham at the Stamford Club in a match sponsored by Linden Homes and BJB Lift Trucks.

Phil Cawley and Luke Mascall scored early goals for the Owls before Adam Buckley pulled one back for the away side from the spot.

Matthew Coleman and Daniel Barrett goals put the home team firmly in control and, despite a Nigel Wallace goal for Nettleham, Brody Robertson’s second half finish cemented a comfortable win.

Mascall was available for selection for the first time since the 9-1 win over Horncastle Town last month and he was recalled to the starting eleven by manager Andy Liddle, along with Phil Cawley, Brody Robertson and Callum Day.

Still riding high on the crest of a wave after last week’s dramatic 2-1 win at Hykeham, the Owls quickly found themselves two up.

First Mascall broke down the right flank and floated in a pinpoint cross for Cawley to nod in at the back post.

Two minutes later, Mascall turned from provider to finisher when he used his tenacity and persistence to force his way through the Nettleham defence and stroke the ball home.

Despite Clee being seemingly in control, Nettleham were given a route back into the game when Coleman was penalised in his own area for holding onto Nigel Wallace. Adam Buckley converted the resulting penalty to halve the deficit.

A hectic 15 minutes followed before Cleethorpes regained their dominance in the game, with strike duo Cawley and Robertson both coming close to adding to the lead.

The third goal did come when a Daniel Barrett corner caused panic in the Nettleham area, leaving centre back Coleman with an easy finish to collect his third goal in four games.

On the stroke of half time, three became four. A free-kick from 35 yards out and on the angle seemed innocuous enough, but Barrett struck the ball so sweetly that it flew into the top right hand corner and made the score line 4-1.

There was still time for Nettleham to peg Liddle’s side back again. Wallace was the beneficiary of some sloppy defending from the Owls, side-footing past Scott Drury.

In a scrappy second half, Nettleham rarely threatened to add to their goal tally with Drury barely having a save to make.

With a little over 20 minutes to play the home win was all but sealed when Alan Lamb got free on the right hand side of the penalty area before pulling the ball back for young forward Robertson, who poked home at the second attempt.

The returning Mascall, a pest to the Nettleham defence throughout, could have added another goal soon after but, despite striking the ball superbly, his rasping effort struck the post and rebounded away from the lurking Cawley.

The full time whistle confirmed the win for Cleethorpes Town, who complete 2011 without a league defeat. The club enters the winter break on 54 points and sit firmly on top of the Sills & Betteridge Lincolnshire League.
