Cleethorpes Taught a Lesson by PontefractPontefract saw an effort go high and wide from Dean Twibey, in reply Ricky Belding was released down the left and went past the Pontefract defence but saw his effort go wide of the upright.
Cleethorpes continued to hold the upper hand in terms of possession but where restricted to half chances from Luke Mascall, Lee Stephenson and Ricky Belding but none of these efforts tested Saynor. Then neat interplay from Pontefracts strike paring of Steve Lyon and Nathan Perks released Lyon who slotted to ball past Scott Drury as he advanced of his line to give Pontefract the lead against the run of play just before half time.
Pontefract doubled the lead soon after half time when McGrory crossed into the box where Perks found space to chest the ball down before volleying into the roof of the net past Drury to double the lead. Pontefract’s confidence grew and the lead was soon increased when a shot from Brenton Leister was too powerful for Drury to take and the rebound fell to Lyons to score his second of game as he reacted first to the rebound. Cleethorpes were now well and truly up against it now and where continuing to find the Pontefract defence in resolute mood.
Cleethorpes 3 – 0 down continued to try and find openings but chances where limited as they tried to push players forward and this left spaces for Pontefract to counter attack and a couple of long range efforts from Tierney but these where well saved from Drury low down, Cleethorpes saw a long range effort from Mascall go high and wide. Alex Flett then saw and effort saved as the midfielder fired from edge of the box towards the top corner but Saynor managed to save well. In the closing minutes shots from Mascall and Flett both went wide in what proved to be a difficult day for Cleethorpes.
Cleethorpes will be looking to bounce back when they visit Selby on Bank Holiday Monday.
