Cleethorpes Town visited Selby Town on Bank Holiday Monday and returned home with 3 well deserved points in a comprehensive 3 – 1 away victory. The game started with Cleethorpes making 2 changes to the starting line up with Steven Cooper selected for his first start of the season and Daniel Barrett returned to the side at full back.
The game kick off and Cleethorpes where very much soon on the back foot as a Richard Peck pass back was intercepted but Danny Moore could only fire across goal much to the relief of Peck. Ricky Belding at the other end worked hard to get in front of his defender and as he unleashed his shot saw it blocked well by Tom Osbourne in the Selby Goal. There was not much happening in the game in the first fifteen minutes but slowly Cleethorpes began to gain the upper hand and were finding joy down both flanks with shots from Jonathan Oglesby going across goal and Luke Mascall firing over as he cut in from the flank. The central midfield pairing of Steven Cooper and Alex Flett where dominating the midfield play and winning the ball at will, spraying the ball out wide where Oglesby and Mascall where being supported well by Lowe and Barrett from their full back positions, the pressure was building on Selby and a move down the right hand side involving Lowe and Mascall saw the ball go into the area where Belding appeared to be pulled back but with no decision being given the ball broke to Flett who lashed the shot into the roof of the net to give Cleethorpes a deserved lead.
Cleethorpes where not content to sit on their slender advantage and Stephenson was working hard up front supported by Belding and neat inter play from the front two allowed the ball to be played back to Steven Cooper who saw his shot strike the upright. Oglesby had time to see another effort go wide before a corner from the left was only partially cleared by the Selby defence and the ball fell to Barrett on the edge of the area who smashed the ball into the top corner. Cleethorpes where looking good and certainly did not want the half time whistle to come.
The second half started and Cleethorpes where in no mood to let up and Belding found himself on the edge of the area and a chip over the Keeper just went over, there was little action for Drury in the Cleethorpes goal as Cleethorpes continued to press forward and efforts from Stevenson, Flett and Mascall all failing to test the Selby Keeper. The lead was extended when a surging run from Stevenson into the Selby area was laid to Belding who beat Osbourne at his near post.
At 3 – 0 down Selby finally showed some purpose and where starting to pump balls forward but where not getting any efforts on goal, Cleethorpes then conceded a goal that was poor one as the ball was hit from deep it went over the Cleethorpes defence who watched Chris Jackson chip it over the advancing Drury to pull a goal back, Selby nearly found a second but the same forward could not get to the ball before Drury gathered the Ball. There was still time to see an effort from Marc Cooper go wide from inside the area.
The game ended 3 – 1 to Cleethorpes to earn 3 richly deserved points next up for Cleethorpes is a tough away fixture at Emley on Friday evening.
