Cleethorpes Town beat Grimsby Borough in local derby

Cleethorpes town claimed their first win in 5 games tonight when they ran out 2-0 winners against Lincolnshire rivals Grimsby Borough on Wednesday night.
436 supporters were in attendance at the Bradley Community Stadium, to witness the first ever league meeting between the two sides at this level.
The Owls had gone into the game on the back of 2 straight defeats against Albion Sports and Shirebrook Town. Borough themselves had only won 2 in the last 6 so both teams had a point to prove but it was clear from the off who had the hunger to win.
Although Cleethorpes were the better team throughout most of the game, defensive errors almost cost them dearly after only one minute, a huge gap was left in the middle of the park, allowing Borough’s Josh Fuller to latch onto the end of a long ball, but he fired straight at the keeper. The home side continued to hold their own against a perky Cleethorpes team who seemed eager to have a go at any given opportunity.
As both sides settled into the game the chances began to flow. The game’s first corner was headed just over by Clee’s Lee McFarland.
Luke Mascall put in a fantastic performance for the Owls, making several attacking runs that frightened the Borough defence. It wasn’t long before the hard work paid off. Some quick, intelligent build up play opened the door for Town on 16 minutes, striker Marc Cooper netted his 3rd goal in two games.
Cleethorpes maintained the pressure throughout the remainder of the half and were in control, but Borough midfielder Josh Fuller caused them a lot of problems, many of which almost became chances, but a sound defence could not be broken, and eventually danger was cleared each time.
The second half saw the game turn into something more like a derby, harsh challenges were made, and penalised as a player from each side went into the referee’s notebook within 10 minutes of the restart.
Borough also managed to create a few more chances, most notably on 55 minutes, although an excellent cross by Josh Fuller could not be converted. The home side lacked control on the ball and lost possession too easily, allowing Clee to capitalize on a shaky defence.
The Owls eventually punished their rivals when they bagged a second on 72 minutes. A sharp attacking run paved the way for Jonathan Oglessey’s cross into the box, Luke Mascall’s shot deflected in beyond the reach of Leigh Cook in the Borough goal, sealing their fate and handing Clee the points. Control remained with the away side for the rest of the game and they continued to pose a threat on the break, but there were no more goals.
The game finished 2-0. A great result for Cleethorpes Town FC, who claim local bragging rights and now extend their lead over Borough in the table, and go 4th themselves.
