Clee Town have now won 3 on the bounce after a 3-2 victory, this time away, at Yorkshire Amateur FC.
The Owls were on the back foot in the beginning as Yorkshire started brightly, making Andy Liddle’s side work hard to get possession. The defence looked shaky too, an attack by the home side early on ended badly for Clee as ‘Keeper Drury brought down the forward, and Yorkshire were awarded a penalty which they scored to make it 1-0.
As the half wore on Cleethorpes worked their way into the game… it wasn’t long before the hard work paid off, Luke Mascall delivered a good ball into the path of Stephenson who headed in at the far post to make it 1-1. They nearly took the lead soon after but Stephenson shot wide following Marc Coopers flick on.
More attacking play followed as the wingers caused problems down the flanks and a couple of chances for Marc Cooper went begging thanks to the woodwork, the first half finished level with Clee the stronger of the two sides.
The second half couldn’t have been more different however, Clee again found themselves on the back foot from the off and were very poor defensively. Yorkshire’s first chance of the half came from a free kick but that was blazed over. Once again it was taking the away side a while to get into the game, but eventually there was a glimpse of things to come when Oglesby cut in and shot just wide of the mark. Yorkshire didn’t heed the warning though and the same thing happened again minutes later, creating an opening for the second goal, which Oglesby gladly took.
Their lead lasted only minutes though as the defence failed to clear their lines and the home side made an instant reply.
By this point the game was end to end, and ver entertaining for the neutral spectator. Clee’s most notable chance in the next few minutes saw Cooper go clean through on goal but he fired straight at the keeper. Cleethorpes continued to search for the winner as both Stephenson and Cooper saw their efforts go wide. The deadlock was eventually broken when Stephenson converted a Lowe cross to give Clee the lead and the points.
Ricky Belding came on as a sub late in the game but his effort on goal went narrowly wide. The final score was 3-2 to Cleethorpes, who march to their 3rd consecutive league victory. Amateur on the other hand are in trouble now with no win in eight, the last five of which have been defeats.
The Owl’s next game is a home fixture against Hallam FC, next Saturday, 13th October, Kick off 3pm.
