Win sees owls rise to 2nd

Cleethorpes Town moved up to second place in the league with a second win in 7 days against Askern Villa with a resounding 6 – 0 away win, that saw them move to within 1 point of the current league leaders.

The first half Cleethorpes where almost encamped within Askern half, with the hosts relying on counter attacks that were few and far between. Cleethorpes saw efforts from Luke Mascall saved by the Askern goalkeeper and a Craig Mitchell shot blaze wide as Cleethopes looked for the lead. The best of the early chances fell to Lee Stephenson whose shot was saved from within the six yard area. It was all Cleethorpes and the lead was taken just before the half way mark as a cross field pass from Stephenson split the Askern defence leaving Mascall with a clear run on goal where the ball was fired underneath the keeper.

Despite this dominance Askern nearly levelled as the Cleethorpes Defence found themselves out numbered 4 on 3 but Askern were not able to capitalise as Drury smothered a weak shot in the area.

Cleethorpes came out in the second half and rose the tempo significantly and put the game beyond doubt as Marc Cooper raced away after some short passing in midfield had set the striker free to score to double the lead. Cleethorpes then stretched this lead further Stephenson capped of a fine move to tap the ball home inside the area.

Cleethorpes where now scoring at will as Stephenson got his second following a shot in the area after the ball was laid to him, then M Cooper hit his second as the Askern defence where opened up once again to provide the simplest of tap ins at the far post.

Then the goal of the game came at Craig Mitchell ran half the length of the field unchallenged to stroke the ball home past the Askern keeper to make in 6 goals with still 25 minutes to play.

Cleethorpes looked to pressurise further and chances fell to Mascall, Belding, Oglesby and Buckthorp but Cleethorpes could not get the elusive 7th goal, Drury then had his first action of the second half as he had to save at the Strikers feet and Askern nearly grabbed a consolation but the effort came back of the upright. Askern then did the same against their own upright as a cross from Belding was headed onto his own post before the referee blew for full time.

Cleethorpes next game is not until Saturday 16th February when they host Louth Town in a 12:30pm kick off.
