Cleethorpes Town slumped to a disappointing defeat at AFC Emley on Tuesday evening, in game where Cleethorpes where forced to shuffle the team for varying reasons. The game was an open game with both sides Clearly better going forward than at the back with the early stages end to end. The big difference though was that whilst Emley tested the Cleethorpes Goal keeper Miles Fenty, Armitage in the Emley goal was largly untested in the opening stages.
It was no surprise then when Emley took the lead after hitting the post and forcing Fenty into a fine save low down. The lead came as Hallan shot from outside the area from a quick throw in that caught the Cleethorpes Midfield sleeping and before they could react the ball had thundered past Fenty.
Emley where continuing to cause problems from corners and Cleethorpes could not clear the ball and as a corner came back out to the taker his cross was parried in by Fenty much to the Cleethorpes Keepers disappointment as Emley double their lead through Schofield
Cleethorpes where forced into an expansive game looking to hit long balls forward, with Jack Richardson seeing a shot blocked on one of the few times play was kept up in the Emley’s final third of the pitch, Just before time Marc Cooper could only head tamely towards goal as a cross from Mascall came into the box.
The second half saw Cleethorpes show more intent and they started brightly but could not force any openings as long range efforts from Marc Cooper, Jonathan Oglesby and Luke Mascall all failed to hit the target. As the game wore on Cleethorpes ran out of ideas in the final third and had to be thankful to Fenty in the goal as he produced a superb save low down inside the area from a shot just in front of him.
Cleethorpes never gave up and where reignited as second half substitutes Robertson, Osbourne and Newell provided some extra drive and energy which saw both Robertson and Osbourne go close after linking up on the edge of the area, though it was too much to do and Cleethorpes lost 2 – 0 there first defeat of the season though with the games coming thick and fast they have the perfect chance to redeem themselves on Saturday away at Knaresborough.
