Clevedon travelled to Huish Park to take on a youthful Yeovil Town side and came away with a 1-0 victory when in all honesty a 5-0 score-line would have been a truer reflection of their dominance.

In the first minute a great cross-field ball from Callum Kingdon found Isaac Reid in space down the right but the Clevedon striker appeared to pull up with a leg injury and signalled to the bench that he needed to come off. Clevedon manager Micky Bell resisted the temptation to make an early change in the hope that Isaac would run it off. This he did going on to give an excellent lesson in hold-up play, speed and skill that the Yeovil youngsters will not have experienced before and on another day he would have bagged his second hat-trick in successive games.

On 8 minutes Clevedon won a corner on the right which Jake Llewellyn swung into the near post and the ball was headed clear. A minute later Clevedon won a corner on the left which Kevin Camargo put into the box and again the ball was headed clear.

At the third attempt Clevedon’s corner routine worked with the Yeovil defence beaten in the 12th minute. Jake Llewellyn swung the ball in from the right to the neat post where Jake Harris beat his marker to the ball and nodded it over Yeovil keeper Kingsley Latham and into the far corner of the net to make the score 0-1.

Clevedon could have doubled their lead on 13 minutes when a quick throw from Archie Ferris found Isaac Reid who ran through into the penalty area and with Kingsley Latham coming out to meet him Isaac curled the ball around the keeper but agonisingly wide of the far post.

Yeovil then created a chance of their own in the 14th minute when Joseph Tomlinson played a free-kick into the box for skipper Jayden Corbridge to nod on and with Dion Macfoy-Johnston looking to bury the ball into the net Ben Murray dived bravely at his feet to claim the ball and snuff out the danger.

In the 15th minute Clevedon nearly scored their second with a carbon copy of the first goal. A Jake Llewellyn free-kick was nodded on by Jake Harris at the near post and with the ball heading into the far post Kingsley Latham just managed to punch the ball to safety.

Clevedon created another excellent chance on 25 minutes. Jake Harris collected the ball on the left and crossed the ball into the box for Isaac Reid to turn his marker and shoot agonisingly wide of the far post with only Kingsley Latham to beat.

In the 33rd minute Clevedon went close again after a run down the line by Isaac Reid saw him pass to Daine O’Connor whose shot went narrowly wide of the post.

Clevedon created yet another good chance on 35 minutes when a Daine O’Connor run saw him play in Jake Harris whose shot was well saved by Kingsley Latham.

Clevedon had to be grateful to stand-in keeper Ben Murray’s quick reactions in the 36th minute when an attempted clearance rebounded off the back of a Clevedon player and dropped invitingly to Callum Morton on the penalty spot but Ben raced off his line to block the shot with his knees and maintain Clevedon’s lead.

On 43 minutes Archie Ferris played the ball through for Daine O’Connor whose shot was deflected for a corner on the right. Jake Llewellyn’s near post ball was nodded on by Jake Harris but Clevedon’s hopes of doubling their lead were dashed as the ball was scrambled off the line at the far post.

The final action of the half in stoppage time saw Daine O’Connor play in Isaac Reid whose shot flew just over the bar. The referee then brought the action to a stop with the Clevedon players leaving the pitch to a standing ovation from the small band of visiting supporters who had witnessed an excellent 45 minutes of football that only lacked the extras goals to reflect Clevedon’s superiority.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 0 Clevedon Town 1

Clevedon started the second half as they had finished the first and on 48 minutes a corner by Jake Llewellyn was headed goal-wards by Archie Ferris and saved by Kingsley Latham. A minute later Isaac Reid worked himself into space and his shot was saved by Kingsley Latham.

In the 52nd minute a back-pass by Jeremiah Gyebi was picked up by Kingsley Latham and Clevedon were awarded an indirect free-kick a yard inside the Yeovil box. The ball was laid back to Jake Llewellyn whose shot rebounded off the wall and was cleared.

On 57 minutes a Jake Llewellyn free-kick found Isaac Reid in the box but he couldn’t keep the ball down and his shot flew over the bar.

Isaac Reid was giving the young Yeovil defenders a lesson in ball retention and in the 61st minute he shielded the ball before accelerating away and unleashing a shot that when just over the bar.

On 72 minutes Clevedon won yet another corner. The ball was crossed in by Jake Llewellyn and cleared back out to the right where Kaine Gazzard collected the ball and beat his marker before firing in a cross that flew across the 6-yard box and narrowly evaded the onrushing Liam Knight at the far post.

In the 73rd minute a Callum Kingdon back-header was too short for Ben Murray and allowed Callum Morton to collect and as he was about to shoot the young Clevedon defender slid in with an excellently timed challenge to win the ball and clear the danger.

As the game entered the closing stages the Clevedon team began to tire allowing Yeovil more time on the ball and on 79 minutes they worked the ball into the box to Jack Hilton-Jones who with his back to goal attempted an overhead kick that went over the bar.

The final action of the game in the 3rd minute of stoppage time saw Daine O’Connor’s run and shot saved by Kingsley Latham and shortly after the referee blew the final whistle allowing the Clevedon players to celebrate an excellent performance and a well deserved victory. Clevedon are now at home to Chard Town in the Second Round on Wednesday 9th November with a 7:30 pm kick-off.

Clevedon are next in action on Saturday 8th October when they travel to League leaders Bradford Town with a 3:00 pm kick-off followed by the visit of 4th placed Buckland Athletic to The Everyone Active Stadium on Wednesday 12th October with a 7:30 pm kick-off.
