Clevedon travelled to Newton Abbot to take on 4th placed Buckland Athletic and came away worthy winners following a superb team performance that produced 2 excellently taken goals and completed the double over their opponents.

Clevedon were quickly out of the blocks and in the 2nd minute Glen Hayer found Tyler Ashmead in space down the right and he beat Buckland’s Simon Laughton before crossing into the middle where captain Kevin Camargo’s shot was deflected behind for a corner.

On 6 minutes young Clevedon keeper Will Bennett had to be alert to push a shot from Richard Groves over the bar.

Clevedon took the lead in the 16th minute when Alex Camm made progress down the left before finding James Fisher on the edge of the box and he spun past his marker before curling a lovely shot into the far corner of the net to give Buckland keeper Grant Fisher no chance and make the score 0-1.

On 25 minutes Buckland won a corner on the left which was taken short to Lloyd Gardner and he cut into the box before seeing his near post shot easily saved by Will Bennett. Another corner from the left 2 minutes later saw the same player run into the box before seeing his shot cleared off the line with the rebound falling to Simon Laughton whose goal-bound shot was deflected over the bar.

Clevedon were grateful to Will Bennett in the 30th minute when Simon Laughton played the ball through for Charlie Johansen to advance one-on-one with the young keeper who stood his ground forcing the striker to try to beat him but was only able to produce an effort that was straight at Will and easily saved.

Clevedon doubled their lead on 31 minutes with a very well worked goal. Glen Hayer found Sam Downe on the left and he played the ball through the middle for James Fisher to collect in his stride and stroke the ball past the advancing Grant Fisher and into the corner of the net to make the score 0-2.

Buckland pushed forward looking to get back into the game and in the 41st minute a Richard Groves cross found Jared Lewington in space but he could only place his header wide of the post.

Clevedon could have gone into the break further ahead when on 45 minutes another rampaging run down the right by Tyler Ashmead saw him get into the box before unleashing a shot that was heading into the far corner of the net before Grant Fisher stuck out a leg to deflect the ball away and keep the half-time score at 0-2.

Half Time: Buckland Athletic 0 Clevedon Town 2

Clevedon came out for the second half looking to further extend their advantage. On 54 minutes Kevin Camargo played the ball through for James Fisher to chase but the Buckland defence managed to block his run however the Clevedon skipper had continued forward and collected the loose ball before seeing his shot was well saved by Grant Fisher.

There followed a 20 minute period where Buckland tried to get back into the game and although they had a significant amount of possession they were unable to create any clear-cut chances. This was largely due to the tireless efforts of the entire Clevedon team to chase back and close down their opposite number to such an extent that following an injury stoppage the Buckland players were so frustrated that they were heard arguing amongst themselves.

Clevedon had a great chance to completely finish off the home side in the 79th minute when James Fisher ran at the middle of the Buckland defence and it took 3 players to stop him with the ball rebounding into the path of Alex Camm who found himself 12 yards out with only Grant Fisher to beat. Unfortunately for the Clevedon man his shot was straight at the Buckland keeper who still had to make a reflex save to push the ball over the bar.

The effort began to tell on the Clevedon players in the last 10 minutes but they fought to the end and prevented Buckland from gaining any consolation.
