After a disappointing performance on Monday all the players met for a team meeting to discuss the tactics to be used against Atletico Madrid. Mark spent a lot of time explaining everyone's role in the team so the player knew exactly how to set up and play.
The match was played on a perfect grass surface which had been freshly cut and marked before the game. It was also a big occasion for the Athletico team to play at their National Centre. The Nomads players were determined to finish the tour on a high.
Nomads started very positively, closing down well and maintaining their shape in midfield. They were quick to the ball and had a lot of early possession. Within the first minute Tom played a ball through to Jack Davies who managed to get his shot on target.
Sam and Iwan were very disciplined in midfield and the communication between all players greatly improved. The defence were confident enough to play out from the back into midfield. Initially the midfield players wanted too many touches on the ball but they soon started releasing the ball quicker.
Nomads took the lead after 11 minutes. jack Davies shot across the keeper who at full stretch could only parry the ball. Matty was quickest to follow up and swept the ball into the back of the net. The goal gave the players the confidence to play. Athletico were still a threat but all the Nomads players raised their game and worked tirelessly for each other in the heat. Regular substitutions were made to maintain the tempo and everyone who came on worked just as hard.
Half-time Nomads 1-0 Atletico Madrid.
The players began to believe they could achieve a result and were very excited at half-time. They were told to focus again and continue to track their runners. Nomads continued to defend well and did not panic on the ball. Jack Aitken found himself on the right and delivered a good ball to the back post. Danny who played with great energy and desire made a run to the back post but couldn't quite reach the cross.
Nomads second goal came from a corner. Luke delivered a great ball to the far post which was met by Owen with his head. The ball flew into the far corner of the net and the Nomads players celebrated wildly.
In the remaining 20 minutes Atletico had a chance which struck the cross bar. Nomads continued to work the ball forward and despite the heat kept working hard to win back possession. Nomads did extremely well to limit Atletico's chances on goal.
Final score Nomads 2-0 Atletico Madrid.
At the end of the game the players were quite rightly proud of their achievement beating a top La Liga academy team. It had been a great team performance and showed how much they can achieve if they listen carefully and follow instructions from the coaches. Man of the match today was Sam Moffatt who kept talking and organising the shape of the team, moved the ball simply maintaining possession and showed great determination to win the ball back. Well done Nomads, great way to end the tour.
