Crewe Alexandra Under 16 Girls Academy Versus Corwen Girls Under 16

Sunday 20th November 2016

Crewe Alexandra 4 v 12 Corwen

No you don’t have reread that score line it is correct!

Our Under 6s Girls are in fine form in the league, topping the table with a 100% record having scored 44 goals and conceding only 4 in the process. They have also secured a quarter final spot in the Welsh FA Cup in a tie to be played in January.

We have an excellent squad this year and have been seeking FA Academy teams as opposition to further develop the squad.

This match was played at Crewe Alexandra’s excellent academy facility – due to some players having other commitments we also welcomed Fflur Williams (Llandudno) and Josie Smith (Rhyl Hearts) to the team as guest players – they were not to disappoint us!

The game opened with Corwen applying a fair amount of pressure to the Crewe Alex goal. Josie Smith fired narrowly over the bar from long range. Crewe then fought back securing 3 successive corners which were all dealt with efficiently by the Corwen defence.

Corwen eventually broke the deadlock, with Fflur Williams bending a low shot to the keeper’s right which left the keeper with no chance. Alex Gore-Rees posed a constant threat to the Crewe right flank and a typical powerful run was rewarded with a fine finish. Fflur Williams further extended the Corwen lead after some excellent one-two football. Elisa Williams then finished a penalty.

Crewe had provided little threat to the Corwen goal with Elliw Ford only being called on to deal with a long range free kick at this point. Crewe did pull a goal back with a fine long range strike but Corwen pulled further ahead with Fflur completing a first half hattrick.

Half Time Crewe 1 Corwen 5

Crewe came out for the second half showing a much more competitive spirit and applied pressure which the Corwen defence, who were well protected by Sophie Hodson in midfield, dealt with well. Crewe however did pull the score back to 5-2 with an excellent free kick that went in off the bar.

This goal only sought to galvanise the Corwen girls who from that point went on to completely dominate the remainder of the match. Fflur Williams went on to score 7 goals enjoying fine service from all areas of the pitch. Josie Smith’s excellent performance was rewarded when she fired home a thunderous shot from 25 yards after being set up by Ffion Evans. Tal McGrail saw a fine performance rounded with 2nd half goals.

The defensive unit of Lucie White. Rachel Roberts (Captain), Ffion Davies and Charlotte Davies continued to limit the opportunities for Crewe. Catrin Evans went on to replace Elliw in goal.

Corwen Under 16’s enjoy strong away support and as the final whistle sounded there was a slight feeling of disbelief in the scoreline! However this was no fluke and this superb performance by the whole team surely bodes well for the future of Corwen ladies football if not the national squad!
