PREVIEW: On Tuesday evening Stourport make the trip across the Midlands from Worcestershire to take on a Coventry Sphinx side who came back into form on Saturday with a comprehensive 5-1 win at Lye Town.
COVENTRY SPHINX: At the weekend Sphinx returned to form in style with a big away win and now they return to Sphinx Drive for their next league fixture. In their last home fixture they were unfortunate to fall to a 1-0 defeat to Worcester City. Their home record is good with 9 league wins recorded at Sphinx Drive so far this season. Ryan Harkin took his tally to 24 goals with a brace on Saturday but recently the midfield have chipped in with goals with the likes of Liam Cairns, Luke Downes, Charlie Faulkner and Jamie Towers all getting amongst the goals.
THE OPPOSITION: Stourport are in 16th place in the Premier Division but they have a number of games in hand due to their excellent FA Vase run. That cup run ended at the beginning of February at the hands of Stockton but since then they have been unbeaten in the league. Those five league games since their Vase exit have produced nine points with 3 draws and a win at home plus a win in their solitary away match. The away win was picked up at Haughmond when they came away with a 2-0 victory. Stourport’s away form has been good with 6 wins and 6 defeats and just the one draw in the league to date. Their away wins have included an incredible 5-4 victory at title challengers Coleshill.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS: Last season Sphinx were defeated by Stourport in the last game of the season at Sphinx Drive. An early strike by Nathan McGarrity was overcome by the visitors as they went on to win 3-1. The fixture at Walshes meadow was full of drama with Sphinx taking all three points in the third minute of added time. Stourport had opened the scoring but the Sphinx substitutes changed the game. Goals from Harkin and Alleyne put Sphinx in front but Stourport equalised dead on 90 minutes. Sphinx weren’t finished however and up popped defender Darren Eggleton to win the game 3-2 in the 93rd minute.
