To manage a team like Sychdyn who are entering this competition for the first time in the clubs history is a massive honor for me

The first qualifying round of the FAW Welsh Cup finally got underway on Saturday, which saw CPD Sychdyn entertain tough opponents in Argoed United who play in the Welsh National division 1.

The game got underway with Sychdyn controlling the tempo and showing just how comfortable the home side were with the ball in the opening 30 minutes. Although in control the home side once again struggled to convert there chances with a powerful volly from Adam Blunden being cleared off the line by the Argoed right back. The captain Tom Barnard also came close by hitting the crossbar late on in the opening 45 minutes.

The break finally came when a brilliant strike into the roof of the net by Adam Blunden on 42 minutes ensured the home side went into the break with the advantage.

The second half saw a different Argoed side come out on to the pitch as they began to look dangerous in the early stages of the second half. The equalizer finally came when confusion at the back for the home side resulted in an open goal for the away teams striker to slot home.

Sychdyn once again began to control the possession with some great passing across the pitch. With the game looking like going through to extra time, Adam Blunden had other ideas when on 84 minutes a Steven Messham Cross into the box resulted in a powerful header into the net to put the home side into the second round qualifier of the cup. Manager Shaun Antrobus couldn't hide his delight after the full time whistle had blown. "To manage a team like Sychdyn who are entering this competition for the first time in the clubs history is a massive honor for me. To actually get a result against a team in the league above and get to the next round is even bigger! The lads played exactly how i wanted them to by using the space available on the pitch and getting into the right areas. The only downside was our Vice Captain Mark Weir having to come off due to injury late into the first half. Hopefully we will take this form into Wednesdays game against Connahs Quay Tigers"
