After an excellent 7 weeks of summer league matches 36 teams would take part over 2 nights of competitions to decide the winners of the Cup and Plate Competitions.
This year for the first time we would see 2 finals each evening as the teams had been split into 2 groups – the first group would comprise of teams from the Premier, lst and 2nd Divisions and the second group would feature teams from the 3rd, 4th and 5th Divisions.
Monday August 19th would see the matches for the 2 Cups.
Teams only had 10 minutes in each round so all the games were played at a fast pace.
In the Premier, lst and 2nd Division Group Cranfield Cavaliers and Ampthill Amazons faced off in the final after both winning their respective preliminary groups.
Cranfield took an early lead with some excellent shooting from Sam Brightman and a strong defensive centre court who turned around Ampthill's centre passes. The score was 7-2 when Ampthill's defence picked off two great interceptions, which Ampthill then scored from. Cranfield managed to keep themselves ahead of the game with the goals going 1 for 1 on the centre passes and were declared the Cup winners with a final score of 10 goals to 7.
In the 3rd, 4th and 5th Division group Cranfield Gems would take on Mayfair Vixens who started with a 2 goal advantage. Cranfield were the more disciplined team and the score was quickly 4 goals apiece. Vixens missed some chances but Hannah Badham was on excellent from as Goal Attack for Cranfield and with Vixens unable to settle in the short time given Cranfield were triumphant by 12 goals to 7 when the final whistle went.
It had been an excellent night for Cranfield as they had done the double.
Tuesday August 20th would see the matches for the 2 plates
The Premier, lst and 2nd Division final would see Kestrels and Team Beds matched up and as they had already met in the preliminary rounds and their positions had been based on their goal difference we knew it was going to be a close game!
Team Beds started strongly taking a small lead but Kestrels remained focussed and crept back until it was goal for goal again. Following an excellent interception by Team Beds' GD they took the lead once more but were unfortunately struck by an injury - their WA had injured her shoulder and had to come off court. With no reserve players, Team Beds finished the remaining few minutes with 6 players. Kestrels used their experience to keep the game steady and maximised the opportunities provided from having the additional player. Thus after a closely fought game, Kestrels were victorious and became our first plate winners of the night.
The semi final from divisions 3,4 & 5 would see Majestics playing Grangers Storm and Cranfield Crusaders versus Meteors with Majestics and Crusaders meeting in the final. Crusaders worked hard to make up the goal advantage Majestics held over the short format with shooter Sophie Beckett dominating in the circle. She was well supported by Lily Hyde and Mel Bygraves who played a match winning part with some excellent interceptions. Majestics were nervous in playing a team containing higher division players and although they pulled together through Natascha Kelly, Sarah McGrath and Callie Williams Crusaders proved too strong and ran out the second plate final winners by 12 goals to 7.
