These two side faced each other at South Molton a couple of weeks ago. I’m told by those that were there it was tight game with Cully snatching the win but very little to choose between the teams. So this game was an even closer one than up at South Molton.
Cully started the game very positively and kept South Molton in their own half. Charlie Hague got the scoring underway in the 7 minute slotting a penalty for Cully. 3 – 0. South Molton started to get their strong ball carriers working and only a combination of good defence and hamdling errors was keeping them out. South Moltons pressure finally paid dividends on 15 minutes with a well worked try. 3 – 7. Things got worse for Cully 4 minutes later with Charlie Hague going to the sin bin for lifting his opponent above the horizontal. Play moved backwards and forwards with neither team being able to break down the others defence. Cully won a penalty just inside the 10m line on 28 minutes and decided they wanted points on the board. Alex Blake Pead scored the penalty with the breeze helping with the distance. 6 – 7. Despite both teams best efforts that was how the half ended.
South Molton started the second half better and scored another try but Cully hit back immediately with and unconverted try by Samir Subhieh on 46 minutes. South Molton had a man sent to the bin for a high tackle (which seemed to be a feature of their play as the half wore on) but it didn’t stop them getting the next score on 50 minutes. 11 – 21. They had another man sent to the bin again for a high tackle 5 minutes later with Charlie Hague slotting the resulting penalty for 14 – 21. Both teams were playing well and searching for the a score, Cully to Level it and South Molton to take the game beyond us. And it was looking like the win would be South Moltons until 2 minutes from time William Roberts bashed his way over the try line, with Charlie getting the conversion. 21 – 21.
Both teams played well and a draw was probably a fair result considering how well matched the teams are. Good Luck to the Colts in their next match.
