Dominos Pizza North Regional Quarter Final
Maud v Culter FC 25/03/17

On a sunny and breeze free day, Culter took on Maud in the quarter final of the Dominos Pizza North Region Cup. Injuries and unavailability left Culter with a depleted squad and only 14 players made the journey.

Maud made the best of the play and were the stronger team for the first 20 minutes during which time they struck the crossbar in one of their attacks. However, as Culter started to play the ball across the field and take control the game a great cross from Frank Smyth was met at the far post by Nicky Gordon to open the scoring in the 23rd minute. Ben McGregor had the next opportunity but his effort was saved by the Maud custodian. Nicky Gordon was instrumental in giving Culter a two goal cushion before the break when he delicately lifted the ball over the keeper following a fine cross goal header from Liam Bain. Derek Boylan’s back post header came off of the woodwork as Culter finished off the 1st half strongly.

As the second half got underway a sliding tackle from Frank Smyth was judged to have struck his hand, this was fiercely disputed by Franky, unfortunately Ross Buchanan in goal was sent the wrong way and Maud converted. This come back was thwarted by none other than Nicky Gordon again following a delightful through ball from Keith Horne and Nicky found the bottom corner of the net from twelve yards. Maud stepped up a gear at this point and following a great save from Roscoe when he touched a goal bound header over the bar the resulting corner was poked into the net to make it 3-2. This revitalised Maud and induced a spell of panic in Culter and it was no surprise when Maud equalised in the 67th minute with another header at the far post.
The substitution of Cameron Moultrie for Ben McGregor freshened up Culter’s front line and they raised their game appropriately. Opportunities for Nicky and Cameron were not taken but from another Culter corner Liam Bain rose like a louping trout and placed his header beyond the Maud keeper. Despite Maud’s claims that the whole ball didn’t cross the line the far side linesman was well placed to act as goal line technology and verify it was a good goal. This knocked the stuffing out of Maud and Nicky Gordon bagged his fourth in 85 minutes, firing past the goalkeeper. Greg Smith came on for Andy Anderson as the game came to its inevitable conclusion.

An entertaining game for both sets of supporters and neutrals alike and Culter now look forward to meeting either Montrose Roselea or Colony Park in the semi-final, date to be announced.
