A look back on the season

The 2022 season got underway in its traditional slot of the last weekend in April. Jumpers may have been necessary on the opening day with a spring chill still in the air, but they were soon surplus to requirements as a long hot summer took way. Only 1 game out of 18 was called off due to rain which must be close to a record for a Scottish summer.

Cults started off slowly in the league, only winning 1 out of the first 4 games but soon after went on a 6-match unbeaten run lifting us up to a mid-table 5th place position where we would ultimately finish the season. There was certainly plenty of drama along the way, a one wicket win against Inverurie that came down to the last over, a tied game against 2nd Knightriders with both teams posting identical scores and a one run victory against Gordonians in a low scoring thriller.

Ali Syed was the man in form with the bat with 332 runs across the season. He was well deputised by Ravi Mahajan and all-rounder Atif Shehman. With the ball, it was the ever-reliant Abid Ali who was the main man once again with 24 wickets. Left arm pace and left arm wrist spin were the other two strengths of the Cults bowling attack, Rizwan Tahir and Irfan Nawaz causing opposition batters plenty of problems.

With another successful and enjoyable season in the books, our attention now turns to the 2023 season. We are always on the lookout for new players/members. To note your interest or for more information, get in touch with our captain Aqeel on 07956 825673.

To matters off the field, there has, rather frustratingly, been further episodes of vandalism to our properties at the Allan Park. All of which costing the club and its members, valuable time and money. We would ask any visitors to the park to keep an eye out for such behaviour.

Lastly, many thanks to our outgoing club secretary, Brian Lynas, who is stepping down from the role due to his commitments as President of the local association, North East Scotland Cricket. Brian has been a great servant to the club, and we wish him all the best in his new role.
