Chew Valley 17
Dings Crusaders 33
DINGS secured a five-tries to three victory at Chew Valley, but as expected, it wasn't all plain sailing for the visitors. The home side made it difficult for Dings throughout this competitive encounter, and could have arguably been the happier of the two camps at the full-time whistle.
Crusaders found it difficult to get into any kind of rhythm, largely due to the enthusiasm and tenacity of the home side, but they would have been satisfied with their application at the set-piece. The Dings scrum was powerful and their line-out productive, but they struggled to find any real fluidity behind the scrum and would have been disappointed not to have finished off a few more tri-scoring opportunities that were created.
Dings led 14-5 at half-time thanks to tries from hooker Tommy Gollop and flanker Anton Welling. Fly-half Kieran Hill added both conversions. The visitors extended their advantage early in the second-half after international referee Luke Pearce awarded them a penalty try following a driving line-out that was galloping towards the line before being dragged down.
Chew, cheered on by a large and vocal crowd, came back into the contest with two quick-fire scores to cut the deficit to 21-17. But Dings finished in the ascendency with tries from hooker Aaron Thompson - his third in two games - and one from player-coach Harry Casson, who also touched down in his last outing against Glasgow Academicals at the weekend. Stand-off TJ Wilstead knocked over the conversion to bring the contest to a close.
