Match Report - Saturday 29th March
Wetherby 41 Doncaster Phoenix 7
Half-time 29 - 0
Phoenix Firsts put in a below par performance on their return to Wetherby to fulfil the fixture that was abandoned the previous Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch.
Both sides were forced into making personnel and positional changes due to un-availabilities but it was the home side who looked more comfortable from the off and and managed to run-in five un-answered tries in the first half hour. With two of those successfully converted they took a 29-0 lead into half-time, though Phoenix did have their chances early on to get on the score sheet.
Two quick attacks that should have lead to tries under the sticks, could have produced 14 points and kept Phoenix in the game - but it just wasn't to be.
Wetherby scored another quick try early in the second half to now lead 34-0 but a well worked move on 55 minutes saw the evergreen Sam Bottomley (pictured) go over for a try which when converted by Tom O'Brien saw the score go to 34-7.
The last twenty minutes of the game were - in no uncertain terms - scrappy. Both sides saw a couple of yellow cards and one Wetherby player fell foul of the referee once too often and received a second yellow for foul play, thus resulting in a red.
Phoenix were unable to take advantage and it was in fact the home side who wrapped up the scoring with a converted try on the final whistle to finish 41-7.
The defeat leaves Phoenix in a precarious 11th position in the league table with one game to go - at home to Old Brodleians next Saturday.
A bonus point win is a must - but we are dependent on other results both locally and further afield to secure our Regional 2 status for next season -- so get down and support the lads if you can -- it's a 1pm kick-off by the way!!
