RAIN STOPS PLAY FOR PHOENIX FIRSTS

RAIN STOPS PLAY FOR PHOENIX FIRSTS

David Townend24 Mar - 19:59

But Seconds win a nail-biter at Castle Park...

Phoenix Firsts will have to travel back up the A1 this coming Saturday (29th March) as their game at Wetherby was abandoned after 30 minutes play when a heavy thunderstorm left the Grange Park underwater and unplayable.

However despite a decent downpour at Castle Park the two Second teams locked horns and put on decent game for the hardy souls who braved the wet and windy conditions.

Both teams played some excellent rugby despite the weather and the first half was pretty even with both teams scoring two tries, the Phoenix touchdowns coming from full back James Atkinson (pictured) and flanker Ben Atkinson (not related). The ever reliable boot of young James added a penalty and a conversion to give the home side a narrow 15-12 lead at the break.

An early second half try from centre Lucien Letory, again converted by Atkinson opened up a 22-12 gap for Phoenix which was added to on the hour mark when Ben Atkinson secured his second of the game - to increase the lead to 27-12 and the home side should have then seem the game out.

But Wetherby came into it well in the last twenty minutes - ten of which saw Phoenix down to 14 men - and they scored two converted tries to get back to 27-26.

However Phoenix held on with some excellent defence and deservedly took a five point win which should see them finish with a top half spot in the YRFU Merit Championship - a fine effort bearing in mind the young, inexperienced team that has played most games this season.

On that note "hats-off" to two old stagers Mike Liddle and Brad Lyddon - who both played forty minutes for Wetherby to allow them to put out a front row -- top effort gentlemen!

The Demons had a mixed weekend unfortunately having to forfeit their Second XV game at Sandal due to illness and unavailability in the squad - but they did take a First XV to Coalville and came back with a narrow 8 - 7 victory --- and record a double over the East Midlands club this season.

The victory also confirmed a mid-table finish in NC1 Midlands (North) with just one game to go at home to bottom side Hull Ionians on the 6th April.
