On 16th June, Downside Wanderers hosted Sherborne Pilgrims in the first round of the Cricketer Cup. Very keen to get one over on their oldest rivals, Downside arrived with a very young and very keen team of OG's only to be delayed by the delightful Mendip weather. The match was therefore reduced to 35 overs per side. We lost the toss and Sherborne wisely chose to bowl first. Wanderers were restricted to a below par 155 all out which meant we would have to do something special in the field. That moment came with the first ball of the second over with Dom Walker uprooting the opposition captain's middle stump. This was followed up with some excellent bowling from Pete Moran, Casimir Gross (3 wickets), Chan Monro (4 wickets) and Ollie Mellotte (1 wicket), enabling the Wanderers to bowl Sherborne out for 134, 21 runs short of our total, to cue celebrations from the home side. An excellent fielding display from the Wanderers was the key to this famous win!
The second round takes place at Downside on Sunday 30th June at 11.30am should you wish to come along and support the team.
