Clarke Departs For The Gills

Clarke Departs For The Gills

Tom Bale19 Jan 2023 - 14:30

Popular midfielder joins Gillingham after impressive spell with the Hamlet.

Midfielder Jayden Clarke has today made the move into the Football League by joining Gillingham.

The 21-year-old has had a brilliant spell with the Hamlet, scoring six times in 26 appearances since arriving in the summer, and having impressed former Dover Athletic manager Andy Hessenthaler in our festive double header, has now moved to the Priestfield Stadium, where Hessenthaler has just been made Head of Recruitment.

The move to League Two continues a phenomenal upward trajectory in his career, having begun his journey in men's football with Bedfont Sports, before joining Hendon and the Hamlet.

On his move, Jayden said "I've been working hard since I was a little kid to get a professional contract and it's finally here, and now I need to push on again."

" I left Tottenham when I was 14 and now I've finally got another opportunity at a professional club, and now I need to make sure I have no regrets whatever happens."

"It's been a crazy journey the last few years and you need the platform and to be playing, and I have been at Bedfont Sports, Hendon, and at Dulwich and that has helped me get a move into the league."

"It's been great being at the club for the last six months, I will miss Dulwich and try and come down as much as I can. Thank you to the manager, coaches and my teammates for their support, and to the fans as well

Jayden sparkled as a trialist in the summer, appearing as a forward in all of our pre-season games before being offered a place in Gavin Rose's squad, and hit the ground running, scoring the winner against Braintree Town on his competitive debut in August.

A second goal would follow that month against Slough Town, as well as the club's Player of the Month award.

Under Paul Barnes, Jayden moved into a deeper role in midfield, but continued to impress, with braces coming in wins against Cray Wanderers and Chelmsford City towards the end of 2022.

Such were the quality of his performances, Jayden earned a second club Player of the Month accolade for December, as well as being named the National League South Player of the Month as well, the first time a Hamlet player has done so since our promotion in 2018.

Along with his six goals, he also managed six assists, with his final one coming in his last appearance for us in the London Senior Cup defeat last week.

"I don't think I've played this consistently for quite a while and that has helped my game," continued Jayden. "I won't ever forget the second goal against Chelmsford and the noise of the crowd, or the one I scored off the bench on the first day of the season when we were drawing 1-1."

"I've also got plenty of great memories from off the pitch too and I will always remember my time here fondly."

Manager Paul Barnes added "I couldn't be any more prouder. We could talk about it being a setback because we lose one of our best players, but for me it's not about that, we say to him to go and climb that ladder."

"This is what the club should be, in terms of developing players, giving them the opportunity, give them the platform and push them into the Football League, it's what I've always known Dulwich to be."

"We will be keen supporters on his journey now, we thank him for all his work and we want to see him keep pushing up the ladder "

On behalf of the staff, management, players and fans, we thank you for your attitude and commitment during your time with us Jayden, not to mention the brilliant moments on the pitch, and we all wish you the very best for your time with Gillingham and beyond, you'll always be welcomed back here at Champion Hill.
