Eagle dominated the top of the league double header to go through to the next round of the cup to face West Park (St Helens).
The men from Thornton Road made it 4 from 4 and go three points clear on Saturday. Eagle started the brighter of the two sides, as they tried to play some expansive rugby in difficult conditions but couldn’t make their chances count, they were trying to force the pass in the first half. Eagle won a penalty on the opposition 22 and Jay Rutter concerted the penalty on 15 minutes. Oldershaw converted a penalty to make 3-3 moments later. They then tried to force their way over in the corner before half-time but, some solid one on one tackling from Martin Young to put the opposition winger in touch saw them come up short.
The second half was much the same, eagle failed to make their chances count. The men from Wirral tried to force their way through the defence but, it stood strong and there was no way through the steely Eagle line. Rutter kicked another penalty to make it 6-3 mid way through the second half. Then two minutes from time, an excellent set piece move from Chris Holden and Simon Banks set up Ben Mercer to seal the win for eagle.
“Captain Ash Losh commented on how delighted he was with the character of the lads in the second half and kept pushing to get the result”
Stand out performers were Louis Nixon and Man of the Match Simon Banks.
Eagle travel to Liverpool St. Helens on Saturday looking to make it five on the bounce.
