In the run up to Christmas they were pushing for the top spot on a weekly basis. This glory was spoilt with a disappointing draw against Southampton and then Horsham 2’s. If they had been a win this would have made all the difference and allowed the side to finish a respectable 3rd place! This demonstrates that every game matters and every minute in that game is an opportunity! Remember ‘hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard’
After the Christmas break they continued to work tirelessly and played some fantastic hockey however were finding the back of the net a challenge in league matches following a brilliant start to the new year in the first January weekend beating Lewes for a second time in the league and again in the cup the following day!
Unfortunately to follow was some decent but fruitless hockey and the side slipped to 4th then 5th position where they remained for the final games of the season. With a poor run of losses they had to beat Barnes and did so on a rearranged match to secure 5th position.
With a talented and remarkable squad and coaches the commitment to the cause next season will prove the deciding factor and an inspiration. They have a great spirit when they are winning and need to keep this up every week to push for promotion to South 2 and get higher than the club’s ladies ever have.
Good luck next season from retiring captain Sharon Clay. Claire Noble and Katie Hilsden will be stepping up to give Sharon a well-deserved break after captaining the side for what seems like forever.
Best of luck ladies!
