Vics Reserves bow out of IOW Junior A Cup at the Quarter Final stage.

Match Report by Nick Mattocks

With just two games to go in the league it was time for the lads to turn their attention to cup football and a tough game against a well organised Wootton team.

With many regular reserve players cup tied due to having played for the first team, today's game gave a chance to those on the fringes to showcase their abilities and give manager Stuart Simmonds something to think about for the remainder of the season.

The Vics started positively and after some good build up Charlie Southcott found himself in space and his shot was well saved by the legs of Wootton keeper Joe Throp after five mins.

Three minutes later the Vics went behind after a cross from Harris Payne was half cleared to the edge of the area only for Korben Westmore to lob it over everyone and into the net.

In a well contested game Wootton's Shaun Kingston was booked for a tough challenge and then the Vics nearly equalised when Rory Day headed across the goal only to see the ball hit the post and divert to safety, and in the 24th min Day saw his shot saved by Throp.

Wootton had their chances too, a great cross field pass from Liam Sumpter found captain Macauley Barnes and his shot went wide.

In the 33rd min Vics' Jack Lavell entered the referee's notebook after a rash challenge and, despite creating another couple of chances Vics had to settle for the 1-0 deficit at the interval.

HT 0-1

The second half quietly but livened up in the 54th minute when Wootton's Harry Green found himself booked after a challenge on Sam Kirby, then Southcott had a free kick pushed round the post by Throp before Wootton's Karl Williamson got a straight red card for a challenge on Mack Blacklock.

Despite having the larger possession of the ball The Vics found themselves two down after Green went over in the area and referee Keyson Colebrook pointed to the spot. Sumpter assumed responsibilty and despite guessing right the Vics keeper Corrie Hallett couldnt stop it going in.

The Vics didn't give up and with just two minutes remaining gave themselves a lifeline when a Kirby corner found its way to Day who tucked the ball away.

Despite their best efforts the Vics couldnt get the leveller to take the tie to penalties and Wootton progressed to the semi-finals.
FT 1-2
