A single goal in the first half seen Leith Athletic narrowly defeat Easthouses Lily in this Conference A League encounter. The visitors came into this game off the back of a poor run with their last 3 games producing a total of 28 goals but unfortunately for them, they couldn't find a way past the Leith rear guard. With manager David McQueenie away for the weekend, team affairs were left to assistant manager Ross McLaren and goalkeeping coach Stevie Hay. Their first decision had to be made earlier than expected with a change to the starting 11 needed to be made during the warm up. Graeme Young pulled up and he was replaced by Lewis Russell. The game kicked off and it was the hosts who had the better of the early exchanges. In the 6th minute, a free kick from the right was flicked on and finding himself free, the Leith striker fired a brilliant effort towards goal but Hay reacted brilliantly to tip his effort on to the post. 4 minutes later, the home side got the opening goal. Brilliant link up play seen the home side make their way forward and the final ball was played into the box. Finding himself with time and space, Stefan Hay finished brilliantly as his effort nestled in the top corner leaving Hay with no chance. The away sides first chance of note came in the 18th minute. Good work from Elliott seen him play in Russell but the striker took a heavy touch and the ball was easily gathered by the Leith goalkeeper. The game should have been level in the 23rd minute. Some nice interchanges between Beattie and McDermott seen the latter play in Ally Elliott. The big striker found himself through on goals but the Leith keeper was out quickly as he made a brilliant save to deny Elliott. Leith thought they had made it 2-0 after 32 minutes but were denied by the inside of the post and then had to watch as the ball rolled agonisingly past the opposite post. It was the Lily's turn to hit the post when Gary Shearer shifted the ball to his left and from the edge of the box, seen his effort smack the outside of the post and go wide. Half Time: Leith Athletic 1 Easthouses Lily 0 The away side came out the second half knowing they had to up the tempo and show a reaction and they did just that. The opening 20 minutes in the second half seen them have what was probably their best spell of the game. A free kick played into the box seen a header from Gary Shearer easily gathered while Danny Taylor fired wide after some brilliant work from the player on the edge of the box to win the ball. In the 60th minute, another guilt edge opportunity was wasted. A free kick was flicked on and after beating the offside trap, the ball fell at the feet of Shearer but again the Leith goalkeeper was quickly off his line to make another brilliant save to deny the winger. A corner played into the aways side box seen a bit of a scramble as the visitors finally got the ball to safety as the home side look to put the game to bed. The home side thought they had made it two but the offside flag denied them as the game was coming to an end. The away side huffed and puffed but struggled to created anything of real note as the game slipped away. Another disappointing defeat for Easthouses which now extends the poor run of results. They now look forward to a trip to face Dunbar United in the league duty next Saturday. Full Time: Leith Athletic 1 Easthouses Lily 0
