Background: Bootle FC

Learn more about The Eagles weekend Emirates FA Cup opponents Bootle FC in this background piece.

Bootle FC play in the North West Counties League Premier Division, which is Step 5 of Non-League, the same Step Eccleshill United compete in, but of course a different region. Bootle play in the same league as Congleton Town - the side Eccleshill played in last season's Emirates FA Cup.

Bootle itself as a town is located in Merseyside, and Bootle's ground is five miles away from Anfield and Goodison Park - the homes of Liverpool FC and Everton FC. Bootle is the closest Non-League side to Liverpool and Everton.

Eccy's visitors were founded back in 1953 (making them sixty-six-years-old) as Langton. However, there was an original Bootle FC who were around in the 1870s, back then they actually had a strong rivalry with Everton FC. Both Bootle and Everton competed for a place in the newly formed Football League, it was Everton who got the nod, and Bootle played in the now-defunct Football Alliance league.

As the years went, financial problems resulted in Bootle going under. The misery of no football club in Bootle was ended in 1953 when Langton FC came into place, after years of planning. The Bucks later changed their name to Bootle in '73 - they were quite a successful team from being formed to the 1980s.

They won the Liverpool County Football Combination League nine times in ten seasons. They also won the Liverpool Challenge Cup and Liverpool Amateur Cup three times each, as well as a Cheshire County League back in 1979.

Bootle's two latest honours came back in 2009 and 2013. In 2009 they were champions of the NWCFL Division One - gaining promotion into their current division. The honour in 2013 was the Liverpool Senior Cup - beating AFC Liverpool 4-3 on penalties.

In 2017 Bootle finished runners-up for the first time in the NWCFL Premier Division, losing out to Atherton Collieries for the title. In 2019 the Bucks agonisingly missed out on the title yet again, finishing runner-up after a 20 match winning streak was halted by a final day draw at home to Northwich Victoria - this saw their rivals City of Liverpool FC take the title and promotion. Talking about Northwich Victoria, that is a side current Eccy gaffer, Lee Elam has played for, making 41 appearances.

It should be an exciting Emirates FA Cup match-up, as the Eagles face a side with a lot of history, and a lot of history that doesn't go as much recognised as it should. If Everton and Liverpool weren't down the road, then it is fair to say, Bootle would be the most talked-about side on their parish of the River Mersey.
