With less than five minutes into the first half, EHU found themselves 0:10 down,
SU having converted a penalty under the posts and a try and conversion to
follow. Not the best start against formidable opposition, SU matched EHU in the
scrum with power and size, but less so in the flair of the backs. EHU continued
to play and press into the SU half, but played without a great deal of belief
and structure. EHU seemed phased by this early scoring from SU and the first
time this season, EHU were behind in a game.
Handling errors were abundant from EHU, but SU did not capitalise on these and
slowly, but surely, the confidence of the EHU team, began to emerge and they
began to take control of the game. Alana Sugdon ran in EHU's opening try in the
corner of the park, sadly sustaining an injury in the process and saw the end of
her game as a result. EHU 5 : SU 10.
EHU began to take the ball into play against SU, but made little headway. There
were classic EHU phases of backs play with passing, but little ground made and
at times over elaborate! SU's matching pack and bigger backs defended well, but
with EHU redefining their playing strategy, gaps began to appear and Safina Clay
ran in EHU's second try with a powerful run from 5 metres out, SU had little
response. The score at half time was EHU 10 : SU 10.
As the second half commenced, SU played with determination and took the game to
EHU, who responded to this challenge, step by step, scrum by scrum and who began
to exert a degree of control in the midfield, not seen in the first half.
Despite less handling errors and confidence increasing, EHU conceded a try. EHU
10 : SU 15. With determination EHU kept their heads up and played steadily and
with purpose. SU endeavoured to disrupt the play and counter attack, but to
little avail. A further injury for EHU, resulted in China Jones having to go off
with a facial injury and some realigning of the pack ensued.
EHU began to gain the upper hand with wave after wave of attacks in the SU half,
resulting in penalties being concede by SU and EHU trying to capitalise on
without success. SU defended well for long periods and when attacking, looked
dangerous.
EHU's third try was ran in by Safina Clay, taking the score line to EHU 15 : SU
15. The game was in its last quarter. With the consistency that is EHU, they
picked away at SU's defence, pressing continually in the SU '22', with attacking
backs moves and confident handling. Something had to give and it was the
discipline of SU, who were to be penalised for not retreating 10 metres on a
quick penalty taken by Rachel Porter for EHU. Sarah Methven, took the penalty,
knowing this could well be game changing in the final minutes....with composure,
the kick went over, EHU 18 : SU 15. Such was the physicality of the game, both
teams were responsible for stoppages of play and the game ran well over time,
almost adding a further 10 + minutes on to time.
SU continued to counter attack, but EHU defended their line and in the final
minutes, SU found themselves attacking the EHU goal line. Both teams threw all
they had at each other and in the end EHU triumphed, defending well and with
composure.
Final score EHU 18 : SU 15.
This was by far EHU's biggest challenge to date, especially the pack, with a
formidably equalled pack to play against in SU.
