The contest revolved around a two minute spell late in the game when Borough spurned the chance to
take the lead only to see the visitors go down the other end of the pitch are notch the decisive goal.
Chances were at a premium in the early stages of the match. But it was Essex Senior League Frenford who opened the scoring on nineteen minutes. Enfield failed to pick up Henry Mabassa at a corner and the central defender headed home unopposed. Given that Frenford’s league is one step above that in which
Enfield compete there was no noticeable difference in class as the teams largely cancelled each other out.
With six minutes of the first half remaining, Marco Magunga collected a pass on the edge of the box,
turned his marker and shot high into the net to level the tie. It got even better for the hosts before the
interval when Rory Harding was upended in the box and Magunga fired home low to the keeper’s right.
The advantage lasted until the fifty sixth minute. Frenford attacked down the right, the ball was cut
back from the byeline and Captain Jacob Barlow met it with an excellent first time volley that gave keeper
Enos Duah no chance. As the tie had to be decided on the night and with no extra-time, the match was
heading towards a penalty shootout when Enfield found themselves presented with a gilt-edged
opportunity. Magunga, who was running away from goal, was pushed in the back and after consulting with
his assistant, the referee awarded another penalty. Substitute Sachon Lawrence-Edwards sent the keeper
the wrong way but the ball smacked against the post and rebounded to safety. Frenford quickly headed to
the other end of the pitch and when the ball was played into the box, Fahad Nazor timed his run perfectly
to stroke it beyond Duah.
In the remaining fifteen minutes both Lawrence-Edwards and Frenford’s Freddie Tandon were red-
carded for an off-the-ball incident and Borough’s Jovan Shand-Aldridge was sin-binned as his frustration
got the better of him. Despite now having just nine men, Enfield threw bodies forward in a desperate
attempt to get the equaliser, but it was not to be.
Enfield return to league action on Saturday when they entertain Coggeshall Town.
