Eynesbury Rovers inflicted only the second home defeat in all competitions this season on Holbeach United as their 2-0 win took them up to fifth in the table. Former Holbeach player Ashley Fuller gave Rovers the lead on his return to the club with Jordan Brown making it 2-0 halfway through the first half. It was Rovers seventh away league win of the season.
Before the teams came out Raw Power by Iggy and The Stooges was played over the PA system. The first time I have heard that at a football ground and not a bad way to start the afternoon!
Rovers’ first chance came from a long range free kick but Dan Draper’s shot hit the defensive wall and went behind for a corner. For third placed Holbeach Josh Ford was unmarked when he fired over the top from 18 yards.
Eynesbury took the lead in the 14th minute when Jordan Brown was sent clear down the right flank. The striker fell over the ball whilst inside the penalty area much to the amusement of the home supporters, however he had the last laugh as he recovered and crossed the ball to the back post for Fuller to tuck home. Just eight minutes later a superb ball from the halfway line by Fuller picked out Brown in the centre of the pitch and he fired low past Ricky Drury to double Rovers’ lead much to the chagrin of the Holbeach supporters. From a corner kick the ball was played to Steve Gentle but his looping shot went over the bar whilst at the other end a James Tricks’ header was headed clear by Jack Uttridge.
Five minutes into the second half Draper and Brown combined to set up Callum Milne and his low drive was held at the second attempt by Drury. Draper had a goal bound shot blocked before an Ashley Fuller shot hit a defender and went behind for a corner. Later in the game Eynesbury almost made it 3-0 when Gentle’s header came off the crossbar and Milne’s follow up shot was cleared off the line. Holbeach’s only effort of note was a long range Jonny Allen shot which was saved by Aaron Butcher. Eynesbury enjoyed the greater share of possession and never looked in danger of relinquishing their lead.
