Ross Hazel’s late free kick handed Fairmuir a dramatic win over Ferry. Owen McColgan’s free kick looked to have won the game for Ferry until Kane Hynes headed Fairmuir level before Hazel netted in the final minutes.
Both sides were coming into the game on the back of opening day wins over Kirrie Thistle and Jeanfield Blacks respectively. Seven minutes had been played when Jake Stewart opened the scoring for Ferry with a low finish from close range.
Nairn Bonnar went close for Fairmuir in quick succession, first firing wide after being released by Jamie Timmons and secondly hitting the side netting after a powerful solo run.
For all their improvements since falling behind, Fairmuir were lacking a focal point in attack, while Ferry were looking dangerous going forward and doubled their advantage after 26 minutes. A free kick was played into the box from deep, and Greg Breen managed to connect with the ball and force it past Cammy Hendry from a few yards out.
Fairmuir introduced Jake Grady from the bench to try and force a way back into the tie, and the striker’s impact was instant as he released Bonnar down the left, who lashed a shot across Connor Milton to reduce the deficit.
Ferry nearly reinstated their two-goal lead when Louie Porter met a Breen corner, but his header was cleared. At the other end, Milton was on hand to keep out another fierce drive from Bonnar.
With half time approaching, Ferry broke from a Fairmuir corner and when Jackson Dobbie was downed by Evan Adam, they had the golden to extend their lead. Owen McColgan stepped up and slotted the ball past Hendry for his second goal in as many games.
Despite falling further behind on the stroke of half time, Fairmuir came flying out the traps at the start of the second half. Milton pulled off a stunning save to deny Grady but couldn’t deny Bonnar who was on hand to tuck home the rebound.
Jay Coupar tested the Ferry stopper with a curling strike as Fairmuir pressed for the equaliser. When Jake Strachan took down Bonnar in the box, they had their chance, and Timmons made no mistake with the resulting penalty, sending Milton the wrong way.
After a strong first 45, Ferry found themselves level seen minutes into the second half. A strike from Porter from 25 yards didn’t trouble Hendry before Milton made a smart save from Grady.
There was little between the sides as the game entered the final stages, and Grady failed to test Milton after turning at the edge of the box.
A free kick 20 yards from goal presented Ferry the chance to retake the lead, and the duly obliged as McColgan rifled a shot past Hendry into the top left corner.
Their joy would prove to be short lived as Kane Hynes headed home from a Timmons corner to level the game once again.
With the game appearing to be heading for a draw, Fairmuir won a free kick on the right touchline. Ross Hazel whipped in a low cross that evaded everyone in the box and bounced away from the diving Milton as it found the bottom corner. 
Fairmuir went close to a sixth when Rory Jagusinski let fly from 20 yards before, McColgan headed a Breen cross towards goal, but it didn’t trouble Hendry, and Fairmuir held on to take the points from a match that will likely go down as one of the best of the 2018/19 season.
