Falcons AFC were founded in 1989 by Club President Hamish Ferguson. The brains of the operation was playing legend and former Club Chairman Sir John Tibbles (There will be a stand named after him one day!), along with former player Simon Bennett after a few too many shandies one evening! The club is based in Charlton Kings and play at The Beeches, priding themselves on offering players from the local community with a friendly environment to play their football in.
The club was originally made up of personnel who had an association with the Charlton Kings Boys Brigade. The first ever Manager of the side was Geoff Ellyatt, with the well respected late Arthur Stiley supporting as Club Secretary. Falcons achieved a third place finish in Cheltenham League Division 6 in their first ever season, followed by a further two seasons of consolidation. The 1992/93 campaign saw commencement of a new chapter as Martin Brill took the reigns in the management hotseat with spectacular results presiding over a side that finished the season as Division 6 Champions, and a runners up medal in the Minor Charities Cup. John Tibbles has also taken the hot seat in several spells since founding the club, with mixed success.
Despite a steady climb over the years, the early 00’s were not kind to Falcons as a severe loss of players saw immediate relegation from Division 2 after just one season, and further demotion to Division 4 in the 2003/04 campaign as the club finished second from bottom having amassed just 6 wins and 21 points, ironically going down with former local rivals Charlton Kings. A focused rebuilding campaign saw the return of a few old faces to go on and achieve a fourth placed finish, to see an immediate return to Division 3, where the club stayed for the next few years. The team also reached the semi-finals of the Junior Charities Cup in that same season, losing out to eventual winners Naunton Park.
The 2007/08 campaign led to two significant appointments into the hierarchy of the club. First, a landmark change in management as John Tibbles handed the reins to Martin Gulliver. This resulted in a major injection of youth into the club after consolidating with what was the Charlton Rovers Reserve side - the aim being to become the Charlton Kings team of choice for the locality and style of football!
The consolidation also meant the introduction of a reserve team for the first time, with which John Tibbles initially took the helm. The first team went on to achieve a commendable mid table finish that year, and a first appearance in the Junior Charities Cup Final, losing out to Tewkesbury Rovers by 2 goals to 1. The campaign was not the smoothest of rides for the second team, but after a settling in period, club legend John Tibbles made his second appointment which saw the return of former player Terry Brill, following his fathers footsteps into management at Falcons.
A much brighter effort followed in the 2008/09 season as both sides battled hard in their respective divisions. Terry Brill took the second team to within 2 points of the division title as promotion was secured to Division 4, with a side that went on to be known as ‘Brills Babes’ losing just three games in their 22 league campaign. Gulliver went into recruitment overdrive as a flurry of new signings saw the arrivals of Tom Dyer & Rob Drew (who followed younger brother Sam to the club), Andy Griffin, and Stu Hendy (who went on to score 40 goals in his first campaign), amongst others. The first team went on pip Gloucester Elmleaze to third spot that year and promotion back to Division 2, scoring 86 goals in 22 fixtures along the way.
2009-10 season turned out to be a season of consolidation as both teams retained their status in Divisions 2 and 4 respectively - although 'Brills Babes' just missed out on promotion to Division 3 on the final day of the season.
Ahead of the 2010/11 campaign, loyal servant Garry Morris began a stint as second team manager, whilst Terry Brill formed a lethal managerial partnership with Martin Gulliver to devastating effect. This year also saw the unveiling of their newly branded badge designed by Danushka Jeewan
A soaring Falcon badge became the clubs first ever official emblem since the club was founded back in 1989. This became the centerpiece of the clubs identity and it's branding, which includes the football strips, website, training gear, and official club correspondence.
