John's funeral will be at Guildford Crematorium at 1.00pm next Friday followed by thanksgiving at Frensham Church at 2.30pm and thereafter at Frensham Cc.
John Storey was a towering presence in local sport. As a young man in 1964 he came down from Teesside and played cricket for Farnham where he took over 2,000 wickets and scored over 10,000 runs.
His later cricketing career was at Frensham CC where he met our club President, Geoff Bond. The story goes that Geoff promised to teach John to play rugby if John taught Geoff to play cricket.
While neither teacher was particularly successful, John loved playing Vets and Geoff adored playing for the 4th XI (and still puts his name up for selection!)
John Storey was a regular, faithful and popular Vets tourist. Not once but twice while on tour he narrowly escaped the fate to which he has recently succumbed.
John loved sport of all kind. He was a truly great mentor for many young sportsmen. He was also a keen competitor. As many a lad will attest if they made a few runs but were out to a stupid shot, John would berate the shot long before he congratulated the runs. "You daft bugger!" he would say in that inimitable northern brogue. But he would say it with a twinkle in his eye and genuine fondness in his voice.
He particularly loved the game of rugby and has chosen to rest for ever in his Farnham RUFC club blazer.
The President of the Club asks all members attending the service of thanksgiving to wear club insignia and, if you have one, your blazer. Sue Storey also asked there be "no black".
