Filey Town’s title ambitions were halted by this defeat at Whitby, despite the visitors leading 2-0 at half-time thanks to a James Pinder double, which means West Pier have won the league for the second successive season.
After the break the visitors seemed to buckle as Steve Swales, Connor Goldsmith and Sam Bailey were on target for the home side, whose man of the match was Jordan Purvis.
Town boss Dave Brannan was disappointed by his side’s capitulation: “I said to the players after the game they were outstanding in the first half but then turned in one of the worst second-half displays I have ever seen to throw it all away, though their second came from a very debatable free-kick as I am still not sure why it was awarded by the referee.
“James Pinder scored twice in the first half but he could have had netted a couple more as we were all over them before the interval.”
