In front of a large crowd, the game kicked off with Flimby playing towards the fire-station, and right from the start it was a battle of the forwards with much of the game being played down the middle of the field.
For the first 20 minutes it was end to end stuff with a mixture of big hits, strong runs and nearly scores with Flimby’s best chance being on 14 minutes when during a tackle, second rower Andrew Prest got the ball away to fellow second rower Darren Degraff who was tackled inches short of the line.
On 20 minutes the deadlock was finally broken when Seaton scrum half Dom Smallwood followed up his own kick through and pounced on the ball to touch down under the posts, he then added the extras himself to give Seaton a 0-6 lead.
Seaton extended their lead on 27 minutes when full-back and man of the match, Kieran Mewse split the defence wide open and strolled in under the sticks, giving himself an easy conversion.
On 34 minutes, Flimby Stand-off Darren Pape was sent to the bin for 10 minutes, for an infringement during the tackle, and despite having an extra man Seaton failed to capitalise and the score remained 0-12 in Seaton’s favour at half time.
Six minutes into the second half and Seaton extended their lead to 18 points through a Stu Gallagher try converted by Mewse, and with more end to end rugby, chances went begging for both teams.
On 54 minutes, Flimby Hooker Lee Hogarth managed to get across the whitewash from acting halfback, but was unable to ground the ball and a try went begging. However on the very next play the ball Lewis Crellin put in a lovely high kick and it was Luke Penrice who beat two Seaton defenders to gather the ball in the air and drop over the line under the sticks to score, Darren Pape kicked the conversion and it was 6-18 in Seaton’s favour.
On 59 minutes, Seaton’s Dom Smallwood slotted over a drop goal, and from the ensuing set, veteran prop Matt Tunstall made a break up-field, where the ball finally found second rower Alex McDonald who raced over for a converted try and gave Seaton a 6-25 lead.
On 65 minutes Flimby controversially had what would appear to be a perfectly legitimate try disallowed, when following a kick through by Darren Pape, the Seaton defender knocked the ball on, which was then gathered by Luke Penrice who dropped over the line to score. There was no doubt about the try just one minute later when straight from the scrum Lewis Crellins long pass found Penrice who shrugged off two tackles to score to the right of the sticks, Darren Papes conversion was successful after hitting the upright and bouncing the right way between the posts. This seemed to spur on the Flimby team who began playing with more urgency, however it was not enough as the final score of the evening went to Seaton Centre Lewis Mason who touched down out wide on 84 minutes, the try was converted and with a 12-31 win it was assured that the BARLA Cumbria Shield went home with Seaton Rangers.
