In a good hard game which Flimby needed to win if they had any chance of reviving their season, the result wasn’t finalised until the dying seconds, and Egremont lost one of their players with a broken ankle – Everyone at Flimby wishes the lad a speedy recovery.
Flimby were first on the score sheet on 15 minutes when Grant Underwood playing fullback for the Vikings, produced a lovely jinking run from 25 metres and scored right beside the uprights, Darren Pape converted to give Flimby a 6-0 lead.
Egremont, were quick to hit back on 23 minutes when their fullback Lee Rodgers got the ball on the half way line and sped through the Flimby line evading tackles in the process to score a nice try converted by Tony Hetherington.
End to end stuff followed but neither team could break the deadlock, and on 34 minutes when a try seemed on the cards for Egremont, Grant underwood popped up with a crunching tackle taking out the attacker, however he was promptly despatched to the bin for 10 minutes due to the tackle being too high.
Just two minutes later and with Flimby reduced to 12 men, Flimby scored a lovely try when the returning Luke Grima made a lovely break upfield, fed the ball to James McCallister who in turn got the ball away to Darren Pape who raced under the sticks to score and convert the try giving Flimby a 12-6 half time lead.
Five minutes into the second half, Flimby seemed to lose some of their intensity, giving Egremont the opportunity to hit a purple patch and score on 46, 54 and 57 minutes, giving them a 12-24 lead over the home side.
On 67 minutes Prop Luke Baker, made a nice break and flipped the ball to the supporting Darren Pape who scored his second converted try of the afternoon and the deficit was once again reduced to 6 points.
On 70 minutes, Flimby were penalised for a high tackle right in front of the sticks and the visitors opted to “take the two pointer” to give them an 8 point advantage and force Flimby into having to score twice to win the game.
The game continued to flow from end to end, and with less than 3 minutes remaining, second Rower Darren Degraff, made an initial break and fed the ball to Centre Luke Grima, who shrugged off the tacklers and powered under the sticks for an easy conversion for Pape, to give a score of 24-26 in Egremonts favour.
With the clock ticking down, Egremont were sure they had the game in the bag, however this was not to be as in the dying seconds of the game, straight from the play the ball up popped young Ethan Williams, who’s speciality this season has been to poach try’s straight from the acting half back position, and true to form he spotted a gap blind side and nipped through to score, the conversion was off the mark, but Flimby had the points in the bag gaining a hard earned 28-26 victory against the league leaders.
