Compared to last year’s washout it was a great summer with 26 league or cup games played plus a friendly.

Everyone who was in the squad at the start of the season played at least 13 matches.

We used 27 players including 8 from the U13B and one U11, Thomas Hill, who took one of the catches of the year at Fleetwood Hesketh.

Overall the team won 6 out of 14 matches in the Southport League, finishing 5th out of 8. We were 3rd for most of the season but a few disappointing results at the end let us down a bit.

In the MYC we were unbeaten in the first stage and qualified for the second phase Shield competition with the other group winners and runners up. Unfortunately we didn’t do as well in the Shield competition, winning 2 out of the 5 matches and finishing 4th out of 6. Overall we won 6 out of 9 matches so still a successful season.

We played in the ECB National Championship qualifying round against Burscough A and Southport & Birkdale and were only knocked out on net run rate.

We played in the Lancashire U13 Cup and got to the QF of the Southport league qualifying section, going out to Burscough A in a game we really should have won.

We scored over 100 runs in 9 matches, bowled the opposition out in 5 matches and were bowled out ourselves in just one match. We won the away match at Tarleton without losing a wicket.

Top-scoring batsman was Ollie Sutton with Daniel McCann second. Carl Guest, Lewis Hill, Jackson Cockbain and Luke Warden also batted well. Ollie ended the season with the highest run total in the club and the highest in the Southport junior league in all age groups, a fantastic achievement.

Leading wicket taker was Matthew Black with 20 wickets including a 5-for against Charnock Richard. Alex Powell got 16 wickets including a 5-for, Ollie took 15 wickets, Carl Guest 14 and Daniel McCann 12.

In the field Joe Mulhall and Jack Lofthouse did really well as wicketkeepers and Luke Warden, Jackson Cockbain and Sam Rimmer were the outstanding fielders.

Ollie Sutton and Daniel McCann represented Sefton U13 but it was disappointing that the other lads selected to be in the district squad weren’t given the chance to play in a match and that has been raised with the district.

Ollie also played for Lancashire Development U13 and won the Sport Arabia Festival at Ardingly College, Sussex.

Best game of the season was probably the loss at home against Ormskirk when 280 runs were scored and 9 wickets taken in just 40 overs.

All the matches were played in a great spirit and the club should be very proud to have such a great group of young players. They play hard but they are always respectful of their opponents and the umpires.

It was a shame that the 4th team folded as that would have given the lads the chance to play some adult cricket. Ollie Sutton, Daniel McCann, Jackson Cockbain and Luke Warden played for the 3rd team during the season.

U13A Batsman of the year
Ollie Sutton. 839 runs, 9 scores of over 50, not out 7 times even when opening the batting. Would have scored more runs if not retired not out on a few occasions.

U13A Bowler of the year
Matthew Black. 20 wickets and only 179 runs conceded. Really consistent and accurate bowling with a lot of pace.

U13A Player of the Year
Sam Rimmer. Great efforts in the field, 13 catches and a run-out. Also took wickets and scored runs.

Many thanks to Mike Poole for some excellent pitches over the season.
