Current records show his wonder strike on Saturday brought him to within one goal of all-time top scorer Peter Taylor on 79. “Simmo” is already the club’s top scorer in league goals only, with 74.
As alluded to in a programme article for the Staveley match in April last year, it should be stressed our records are not complete and are patchy to say the least before 1980 (when the club started producing programmes). My work on this (along with historic player appearance stats) is ongoing, so the top ten below is subject to revisions as any possible ‘missing goals’ are uncovered, indicated by *.
1. Peter Taylor 79* goals (of which 53 league)
2. Mark Simpson 78 (74)
3. Greg Kelly 75 (65)
4. Simeon Bambrook 74 (50)
5. Vinny Archer 73* (58)
6. Patrick Flaherty 60 (36)
7. Paul Thompson* 58 (32)
8. Darren Falk 50 (30)
9. Howard Lee 49* (34)
10. Chris Betteridge 46* (35)
I am indebted to the work of former programme editor Mark Clough who originally put this table together, and the assistance of chairman Brian Close and supporter Danny Hoskins with old programmes and teamsheets.
