Gills slip to late penalty defeat.

Gill slipped to a late defeat at home to Portishead in their final home match of the season.

With both teams hoping to conclude the season with a flourish it was the Gills who made the better start with the Portishead keeper making several early saves. The deadlock was soon broken when Max Westlakes clever pass found James Boyland who delivered a pinpoint cross for the arriving Jordon Clapp to power a header beyond the reach of the keeper.

The lead didn't last long and Portishead were level when a corner ricocheted in the box and deflected into the bottom corner. Portishead had a fabulous chance to take the lead one on one but Gills keeper Reece Bannister made a crucial save with his feet. Gill were back ahead shortly before half time, the advancing Charlie Male linking up well on the left wing delivered a low cross for Boyland to smash home at the far post for 2-1 at half time.

Despite leading the game the Gills dropped off the pace in the second half and found it challenging to retain possession and maintain any consistent pressure. A Portishead free kick was parried by Bannister and the rebound tucked in to level the scores.

As the game looked destined for a draw, the Portishead striker chased down a lofted through ball and cleverly invited contact hurling himself to the ground. Appeals were waved away by the referee only for the linesman to flag for a penalty.

Again Bannister made a terrific low save with his legs but unfortunately the rebound ended up bouncing straight back to the kick taker for a tap in. A disheartening end to the season at Woodwater Lane in front of a decent crowd. With todays goal fest it means Woodwater Lane has seen 100 goals this season, more than any other club in the Western League Prem/Division one.

We were delighted to welcome the young Gills team as mascots for the game and would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our loyal supporters and our dedicated & hard working volunteers for their contribution to the club throughout a very long season.

The Gills finish their league campaign on Tuesday evening away v Hengrove. Gill are all but safe from relegation with Radstock and Bishops Lydeard needing to win all of their remaining games to have a chance of catching the Gills.

Our focus at Woodwater Lane now turns to our upcoming music festival on Saturday 15th July 2023. We are excited to welcome some incredible local bands again this year.
