1. June 2013 Newsletter

June Newsletter
Well, what a difference a month makes, after bemoaning our slow start to the season in the last issue, we now have a truly historic piece of Club news to report, alongside a whole host of victories for our teams.
Rob Sperrin, fresh from a century the week before, at home to Brodsworth, decided to go one better in the home cup tie against Darton and smash the Club’s all time batting record, finishing on 202, not out. He then went onto take five wickets and so produce one of the most outstanding individual performances in the Club’s history. Ironically the previous highest scorer for the Club was one John Sperrin, father of Rob! I think there is little doubt who will be winning the performance of the year prize at the annual awards.
The fact that we have produced some winning performances this month is in no small part due to some fine individual performances. Gareth Portman hit his first half century of the season in the victory over Brodsworth. The good batting continued at table topping Hundhill Hall, where Liam Hopton knocked a fine 60 with support from Andy Richards quick fire 30. Daz Sharp then took 5 wickets in only five overs to secure another victory and early thoughts of promotion in the dressing room.
For the 2nd XI Elliot Spears took a fine four wicket haul in the nail biting low scoring win at Knottingley, once again Peter “Cocky” Cockcroft ensured his pension was deserved with 3 wickets.
For the U17s Jordan Mills impressed in the match against Featherston with 4 wickets and Alec Boothroyd added 33 not out to his two wickets. Josh Liddle has been imperious with the bat for the U15s hitting numerous 50s and ensuring our first three league matches resulted in three victories. Congratulations to Ed Morrison who has been chosen for Yorkshire U15 A team and also selected to play for the Academy.
Another piece of Club history has been made this month as it is with great sadness that we have to announce that the old roller has been retired to the great scrap yard in the sky. Its replacement is a nice shiny new model, that we hope will last as long and produce such fine wickets as the old one. The committee will shortly decide on the date of the naming ceremony for “Janet.”
Once again the Car Boot was a great success and thanks to a lovely fine day we had record attendance and have already helped pay for some of the money spent on drainage, roller etc. Perhaps it is no surprise that the Treasurer was heard to be taking a holiday next month to recover from all the cheques he has had to write in the past few weeks.
As always, a huge thank-you to all those who helped with the Car Boot; Tony Gale, Dave, Janet and Stuart Adamson, Catherine and Andrew Richars, Andrew Raven, Ady Thackray Jack Evans, Leo Gale and John Sperrin..
The “Dads and Lads” and anyone else who fancies an afternoons sport at the home of cricket is being organized by Catherine for Sun June 30th. Final details will depend on the 1st team cup fixture. We hope to have a BBQ and the bar will be open, all we need is some fine weather.
A quick resume of the Clubs teams show that we are now well and truly into the season. After a poor start the first team have been unstoppable largely, thanks to the runs of Rob Sperrin, but ably supported by Liam Hopton and the bowling of Daz Sharpe, and Gary Mappelbeck. Indeed Gary was so pleased with his recent three wicket haul that a night out in Cas Vegas has resulted in a broken toe and a few weeks on the sidelines. Mind you it has not slowed down his ability to get to the bar!
Now we must be careful when we come to the 2nds, as the last two matches have seen us
bowl out the opposition for around 60 but fail to knock off the runs to win! Oh dear. Tony has taken to a darkened room and Simmo is now re-painting the sight screens for the third time. Do not even try to humor them, just smile briefly, talk about holidays or the rugby and buy them a pint. Despite the batting not quite firing on all cylinders the bowling led by new prospect “Cocky” has been outstanding, with Elliot Spears taking two four wicket hauls and the two tearaway opening bowlers Luke Jaques and Jake Medley knocking the top off most teams batting. Damn, who mentioned batting! Next issue we will be reporting them chasing down 300!
Unlike last season the Juniors have all played a number of games without worrying too much about the weather forecast. The U17s have welcomed a number of new players and are one of the strongest teams in the league, with even the defeats being close affairs. The U15s until last weeks loss against a really strong Castleford team, were undefeated in the league and looking good to be top spot contenders. However with the likes of Elliot Jones, Sam Whalley,Luke Pocklington (what a classy batsman he is now looking) and Sam Hack in the field we will soon be back to winning ways.
The tradition of Thursday night fever has been maintained this season thanks to Andrew “Rock On” Raven, who has organized, coached, umpired, swept the changing rooms and done everything else in between. He must be doing something right as the numbers at training each week seem to be growing and growing, so much so that he will be seen with a sheep dog next week to help keep them all in order.
Just as we go to press news has reached the sports editor that Rob “The Century Man” Sperrin has hit, yes you guessed it, yet another century in last weeks home victory. Wow, buy that man a pint of Red Bull, point him to the crease and stand back. Just amazing.
A few bits and pieces for your diary before we all tuck into the burgers. Next Social is Sat July 6th, usual time and place.
The Centre is hoping to put on a two day cricket course in the summer hols, Aug 8th & 9th, £25 for two days. To book a place call 511234.
And finally spare a thought for two U15s playing in the Sunday team, Luke Pocklington and Jake Medley, who had the luck to be batting with Danny Thornton (experienced hard hitting batsman.) Despite a nasty broken ankle last year Danny purchased a new set of go fast cricket shoes. He then managed to show that as you age your mind is quicker than the body, as he proceeded to run out both Luke and Jake. His legs being 10 yards behind his brain,-“Yes..No …Sorry lads!”
