Glossop Juniors held their first ever Football Festival last weekend at Surrey Street, home of Glossop North End.
The event was an unrivalled success with over 60 teams, over 500 7-10 year old junior footballers and over 1000 coaches, parents and supporters through the turnstiles on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
The pitches were immaculate, and the feedback to date on the organisation and the environment for safe, fun and exciting junior football have been flooding in.
On Saturday morning the under 7’s was won by Reddish Vulcans with Glossop North End blues narrowly missing out. The under 8’s were treated to some High Peak weather on Saturday afternoon but this didn’t dampen spirits with FC Sports winning this age group. In glorious sunshine on Sunday morning the under 9’s saw local side Chapel Town edge the final on penalties. On Sunday afternoon over 100 girls played in the largest girl’s competition North Derbyshire has seen with Heyside Angels victorious.
There was some great football played throughout the weekend with an emphasis on fun, skill and #Respect for players, referees and coaches. All players received a winning medal for participation .
Over 30 Glossop North End AFC volunteers ensured the event ran smoothly with GNE Chairman and junior’s president even helping out in the refreshment hut! Supported by online tournament updates, beat the goalkeeper, speed cage , ice cream and a full refreshment service and support for St Johns Ambulance ( fortunately not needed) everything went to plan.
We would like to thank everyone who made this event such as success , including all our sponsors JJ Training, High Peak Creative , Rockpool photography , EDESS Electricity, Tom Howley Kitchens, GKC Goalkeeping, PAS , ITEC engineering, Linden Homes, Lucas Fettes and PAS .
Glossop Juniors would like to thank Glossop North End AFC, event organiser, Jon Mathews, the committee, coaches, players and supporters again for another amazing year on and off the pitch – “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. Viva GNE!
