U9's v Moston Brook U9's

Jon Matthews23 Aug 2016 - 06:34

Penultimate game of the Summer League

On a weirdly autumnal August morning the brave 8 of GNE prepared to face a good Moston brook side who we'd lost to earlier in the season. The team set up with Nathan in goal, Lucas and Matthew in defence, Alex, Len and Luke in the middle and Joe up front! This match was played with our boys shooting toward us to start and Nathan far away in the distance! From the first whistle the GNE boys pressed hard and spent much of the first half in the Moston half. Good passing, tracking back and defending saw the boys leave Nathan with little to do for much of the half. Louie came on and Joe made way as the team continues to work hard to keep the ball as much as possible in the Moston half. Good team work and awareness of each other kept the play firmly in the Moston half and a good link up from defence through the mid field to striker saw Luke slot home a goal just before the half time whistle.

A quick drink and team talk saw another half start with Luke back on and Len back on.

Again from the whistle the boys pressed hard but with Nathan's back toward us we were able to see far more of the great passing and action as Moston returned to the pitch determined to even the score. Not long into the second half Moston caught the boys pressing high and left a gap. They pounced on this rare occasion and even though Nathan made a brilliant save and the boys had tracked back to defend Moston's resilience paid off with a simple goal against the run of play. All supporters and coaches cheered the GNE boys on to keep playing as they were.

After the restart a superb passing movement saw the GNE boys fly though the Moston team and left Alex with his first opportunity to score as a GNE boy, which he did with a cool head and great strike into the Moston net. A great cheer was sent up by the supporters.

Some more great movement, and passing saw GNE press again but Moston took a rare missed pass as an opportunity to run back into a good position for an attack. The GNE boys defended and once again Nathan was called upon to be alert as a great shot came towards him he dived and made the save and then scrabbled to hold onto the ball, the GNE boys all ran out of the area to give him space and as he kicked the ball away the final whistle blew.

A great performance by the boys who had played with consistent determination and teamwork. The MOM went to Nathan as his focus, concentration and saves were the difference today.

One more match left! Come on GNE boys!!!
