15TH/16TH JUN - WFLA CHAMPION'S CUP WEEKEND

A mixed weekend up at Redditch United for the Champions Cup, which is a tournament for the winners of affiliated FA leagues throughout England and Wales.

Saturday saw the 50s play, with quite a few unavailable it was a late decision as to we could put a squad together, but thanks to Geoff and Simon, we had 7 players. Unfortunately the first 2 matches saw us come up against full strength Coleshill and Watford sides, both ending in 4-0 defeats. A 0-0 draw against Bracknell Town followed to put us in the Plate competition,
A victory on pens after a 1-1 draw against Denton, with Carlo scoring the goal, put us up against old TVL foes Oxford Rovers, in a tight game, a Sparksy goal gave the Gods the win.

On Sunday, it was the turn of the 60s to play, who were the defending champions.
Things started well, beating Swindon Town 1-0, drawing with Barnet 1-1, then defeating Aylesbury United 4-1 to top the group.
In the semi final a 2-0 win against Bournemouth Reds, saw the Old Gods trough to the final to play Leggy Mambos from Barnsley. In a tight game, the 1st goal was going to be crucial and a good finish by the Mambo's striker gave our opponents the lead. We pressed and created a couple of chances, but they managed the game out well to win the trophy. Well played to both sides in what was a good game.
