GODS TAKE HONOURS WITH NORWICH CITY RUNNERS-UP

After the disappointment of the WFA finals last week, the Gods 60s had another chance to play against some of the top WF teams in the country at the WFLA National Finals in Redditch.

With 6 Regional qualifiers, it was around robin of 5 matches.
Match 1 v Abercynon W2-0
Started the game well and soon took control with goals from Dave and Andy. Managed the match well to start with a good win. To be fair to the lads from Abercynon, think we caught them cold, as they played much better in their remaining games.
Match 2 v Bournemouth Reds W3-1
Another game where an early goal, settled the Gods and ran out comfortably winners, goals from Tim, Dave and Mike. Nice goal from the Reds with virtually the last kick of the game.
Match 3 v Leggy Mambos
After losing to LM in the WFLA Champions Cup Final, we knew they were a quality team, who keep the ball for fun! Game started quite cagey, both team made openings, but wasn't until a DOGSO on the skilful LM No10, that Gods really pressed, LM still held the ball well, but eventually Gods made the extra man count with Foxy scoring the winner!
Match 4 v Bolton Arena
Quickest game of the 5 played, very competitive, with good football from both teams, Bolton keeper made some good saves and Bolton hit the bar at the other end, draw a fair result.
Match 5 v Norwich City (or affectionately known as the Scum to us Tractor Boys! - must admit though, their walking footballers are a nice bunch of guys)
Going into the last match, we knew it was between us and City, and as we had the better goal difference, a draw would be enough. Saying that, both teams went for the win, but as the time passed, Gods managed the game well to get the draw and take the title.

A really good day, good enjoyable football against some smashing teams, well played to all that made the finals. All of the Godalming squad played their part in what is a great achievement for the club in retaining the trophy.

Squad: Bill Billingham, Glenn Mitchell, Phil Atkinson, Graham Fox, Tim Gorringe, Andy Litchfield, Dave Bearham and Mike Royce.
