This seasons junior interinsular was as competitive as it has been in recent years, reflected in the overall result being a draw between the two islands.
PwC U14 Girls
First match on meant there was an excitable and nervous atmosphere within the U14 Guernsey Girls team, but they were carrying some good winning momentum into the match. They played to their full potential and dominated for large parts of the game; Amelia Fooks was rarely troubled in goal and dealt assertively with any threats. Player of the match for Guernsey was Claudia Bailey who didn't miss a tackle all game and followed up with a number of piercing passes up the pitch. They reached half time 1-0 up, but it could have been multiples more with Pheobe Elliott playing excellently as a high forward and narrowly missing a couple of good chances. Beatrice Moakes scored both Guernsey goals with confident and calm finishes near the posts in each half. Jersey took control in the middle of the second half and threatened the Guernsey defense on a few occasions, before the dominant Guernsey midfield of Matilda Bachmann, Belle Otty, Lavinia Colclough and Gracie Guille again took control and carrying the team to a convincing win.
PwC U14 Boys
The U14 Boys suffered a 2-1 loss. They started the game the stronger side with an effective press making it difficult for Jersey to escape their own half. The early pressure led to several chances, with player of the match Joel Hoolahan having the best of the efforts. Against the run of play Jersey found themselves taking the lead with a well worked goal from a long corner. Guernsey went into the half time at 1-1 after a well worked short corner saw captain Rufus Bousfield score just before the break. The lead was retaken by Jersey shortly into the second half. Guernsey dominated the later stages of the game in search of an equaliser, but Jersey held their shape and were able to withstand the pressure despite 2 big chances for Guernsey in the last 5 minutes. Coach Barney Lewis reflecting on the game stated, “The boys played brilliantly and executed their game plan, it was just unfortunate we were unable to take our chances in front of goal.”
Pwc U16 Girls
The U16 Girls had a closely contested game, where Guernsey began looking the stronger side and scored the first goal within 10 minutes of the game starting. After some team play up the left-hand side of the pitch, Chloe Ingrouille found the side netting from a tight angle. Jersey responded swiftly and had some strong attacking phases, which Guernsey defended well in their defensive quarter. However, they could not stop the hosts from slotting in two goals and taking the lead for the remainder of the game. Despite some short corner opportunities towards the end of the second half, Guernsey was unable to find the equaliser. Time was running out and Guernsey won yet another short corner, upon which the final whistle blew. The first strike was blocked, but Jess Mahy was there to pick up the rebound and give Guernsey a second goal to end the game on a well-deserved draw.
PwC U16 Boys
The PwC U16 boys played in a thriller to end the day on Saturday. The scoring was opened early in the game by Sam Fawkner-Corbett, running onto the end of a well measured pass from Joe Culverwell. The lead didn't last long though with Jersey hitting back almost straight away. The game continued relatively evenly, with the Guernsey boys trying to play their possession-based game, albeit very much in their own half. There were few chances for the boys in green and Jersey soon created some opportunities and went into half time 3-2 up after Alex le Tocq converted a Penalty Corner for Guernsey. After some good discussions in the team, Guernsey began to play further forward and were able to dominate possession for large chunks of the half, consistently pinning Jersey into their defensive area and calmly coping with any Jersey breakaways. With 3 minutes to go, Guernsey ended up down to nine men with Alex le Tocy and Byron Wakefield on the receiving end of sin-bins. This, however, did not stop Guernsey playing their way and when George Moakes returned to the pitch in place of le Tocq with 30 seconds to go, the main character in the final moments of the game was introduced. As Jake Taylor broke through and won a free hit with clock winding down, Joe Culverwell and Boris Bousfield displayed calmness and quality decision making to set up a final second strike; Moakes scoring with his first touch since returning to the pitch. Scenes of wild celebration followed and captain Ed Heathcote was awarded Guernsey's player of the match for outstanding display in defence. The 3-3 draw meant that the overall score was tied, and that Jersey retained the trophy after a previous 3-1 victory last time round
