An Introduction to Guy's Hospital Rugby Football Club

A warm welcome to the official website of Guy's Hospital RFC. Here you’ll be able to keep up with everything from fixtures, match reports, events and find contact details for the club. The site is open to everyone to view from prospective, current and former players to parents and supporters of the club. We hope you enjoy learning more about the club and look forward to your support.

173 years ago, in 1843, GHRFC was formed, thus making it the oldest rugby club in the world. It was a founding member of the RFU and has produced 11 British & Irish Lions. We represent the medical schools of Guy’s, St Thomas’ and King’s College London and this is a history we are very proud of.

We will be competing in several competitions this year. On Wednesdays, our 1st and 2nd XVs will play in the regional BUCS leagues against other universities in the South East. Whilst on Saturdays the 1XV will play in the NAMS (National Association of Medical Schools) Cup. It’s a nationwide tournament that gives us the chance to pit ourselves against some of the best medical schools in the country. In addition to this, we also enter a team into the Kent League on Saturdays – which gives the chance for both current players and old boys to get a game, showing the ample opportunity at GHRFC to play rugby. The UH Cup consists of 3 games in total if we make it to the final, it involves students and (a limited number of) old boys in the team. It is the oldest rugby tournament in the world and is the pinnacle of the season. Both the 1st and 2nd XVs will be involved in the UH Cup. With the 2XV winning the cup as recently as the 2014-2015 season, demonstrating the high standard we regularly reach in it.

There is also a representative UH team that incorporates players from all London medical schools, taking the best players from each of the clubs to play together. This will consist of around 4 games per year if you are selected to play and in the first UH game of last season (a win against Cardiff Medics) we had 5 players selected. We will enter into various 7s tournaments throughout the year, involving both current and old boys e.g. UH 7s and the Chiswick 7s (Which we won this year).

Special exhibition matches will occur throughout the year and will involve current players (1st XV and 2nd XV) and old boys from the club. These will include games against teams such as Cambridge, Oxford, and GHRFC Penguins, with the matches against the Penguins making for a great experience, players can look forward to a ball afterwards raising money for charity. During the matches, we will make use of our popular clubhouse at Honor Oak Park, making for events that are not to be missed.

On the social aspect alongside the weekly post – match frivolities we have two tours during the year. The first tour is the Freshers’ tour in November to a mystery location in the sunny UK, where freshers (accompanied by the older students) play a match and sample the delights their mystery city have to offer. The second tour is the joint Rugby-Netball summer tour, again in a mystery city (sometimes abroad) and like the Freshers’ tour never fails to disappoint. In addition to this we have the chance for current and former players alike to suit up with two balls the Penguins against Cancer Ball in October and the Summer Ball in June.

The GHRFC Supporter’s Club is an important part of the club and consists of former players and supporters of the club. It is an extremely active club (GHRFC Penguins) that partakes in exhibition matches during the year and of course two matches against current GHRFC players. What makes the Supporter’s Club so unique is the lengths that they take to live up to their name. They organise events, donate to the club, and their unwavering support is one of the reasons the club is able to thrive. In addition, the generosity of former players has made it possible for the club to offer £3000 worth of scholarships divided between three club members who demonstrate exceptional talent or commitment.

The Supporter’s club do more than just support the club and have their own charitable organisation – Penguins Against Cancer. We support them on a yearly basis with the annual Freshers vs Penguins match in October followed by the Penguins Against Cancer Ball - an extravaganza that shouldn’t be missed! In addition to this, along with the GKT Women’s Rugby we host an annual touch tournament during freshers’ week (22nd September, this year) to help raise some more money for the worthy cause.

We believe our pride and passion for the game but also for our extended rugby family is a big part of the reason for the wealth of players who want to and have put on the GHRFC shirt and we welcome any Freshers wanting to join our ranks regardless of course studied and experience. The cyclical nature of university means there is always room for Freshers to join the club and make a big impact for both our 1XV and 2XV respectively.

Pre-season training begins September 4th, and we encourage all potential newcomers to join us in working off that summer gut! Freshers' trials will take place on 28th September, and will be a great opportunity for all attendants (Freshers, experienced players, novices, and intrigued older years) to get a feel for this wonderful institution. We look forward to seeing you there.
