Another frustrating night on the road for The Ambers

Another frustrating night on the road for The Ambers

Ian Robinson12 Oct 2023 - 19:38

The Ambers were beaten for the third game in a row as they went down 2-1 at Goole ....

The Ambers’ winless run extended to three games after a frustrating performance that saw them beaten 2-1 by a Goole side who were second bottom at the start of play, but whose recent victory at Thackley showed that they are more than capable of turning anyone over.
The first half performance from The Ambers wasn’t too far off the mark, other than the fact that they failed to take advantage of the numerous chances they created, the closest of which saw Mason Barlow’s header from a Tom Cropper cross beat ex Amber, Chadwick in the home goal, only to come back off the bar.
Masai Arbouin had an early effort saved, and Owen Haigh headed a reasonable chance over from a corner, whilst Mitch Dunne missed a close-range header from a Michael Trench cross and then poked a shot wide after a barnstorming run down the right by Cropper created the chance, either side of a Brandon Bagley strike which arrowed through a crowded box but straight into the arms of the keeper.
In response, The Vikings looked dangerous down the wings but never really tested Dylan Parker on his return to the wonderfully named Victoria Pleasure Grounds on a night when the atmosphere was helped by the impressive young Goole Ultras who never stopped drumming and singing throughout the game.
After a goalless first half, the hosts picked up the pace in the second and there was a sign of things to come when Petch raced clear down the right but shot beyond the far post before Parkin flung himself across his line to turn away a fierce strike from Flanagan. The tricky winger then had a great run down the left and after taking the ball round Parkin was only denied by a terrific intervention by Trench.
The Ambers were soon back on the front foot and Haigh headed just over from an excellent free kick by Sam Fewkes, but within a minute, a strong run by Washington fed Petch down the right and his cross was turned home by Flanagan at the back stick to break the deadlock. Whilst Alfie Dodsworth and Aaron Moxam were immediately brought on, they could do nothing to prevent Goole doubling the lead five minutes later when Gelder squeezed the ball home at the front post after another ball in from the right wing.
Dodsworth tested Chadwick with a well struck effort from just outside the box and Leon Howarth also warmed the keepers hands with a shot from a tight angle, before Mitch Carlton’s ball into the box was handled resulting in an injury time penalty, and Dodsworth did the honours to give The Ambers some late hope, but despite pushing for the last couple of minutes of added-on time, there was to be no late equaliser.
The Ambers must now pick themselves up ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Frickley Athletic.

Ambers Line up: Parkin, Cropper, Trench, Fewkes (Nelthorpe 85), Carne, Haigh, Bagley (Dodsworth 70), Arbouin, Howarth, Barlow (Carlton 79), Dunne (Moxam 75)
