Harrow a great club for Youth Rugby

Harrow a great club for Youth Rugby

Neil MacDonald18 Dec 2009 - 20:40

Simon Reynolds, Youth Chairman, tells it like it is about Youth Rugby in the Harrow Junior section

The Harrow Junior club section is having a very busy season competing in the Herts & Middlesex leagues with 7 full Youth Rugby teams from the six age groups. Our U15 side has also been on a mini tour to Manchester and I know the weekend was very successful. Overall, the section(U13 thru Colts) have experienced both good and mixed results this season so far but the enthusiasm and commitment has been excellent, and we have some very talented players developing at the club.

The U13’s have found the transition from Minis to Youth tough but have recruited more coaches and are moving forward brilliantly with some talented players and a great team spirit.

Our U14’s run 2 full squads and if success was based purely on numbers would be winning everything. Results have been good and the ‘A’ squad are on course for promotion with the Development squad holding their own well and showing strong improvement.

The U15’s have found the move into Division 1 hard and are looking to consolidate their position as one of the best teams in the league.

The U16’s have continued to succeed in Div 1 and are lying second at this stage but have their hardest games at the End of January and the Beginning of February. These games will probably define the final League positions.

The U17’s have found players hard to come by this season but have managed to fulfil all fixtures and if they could get a few more players would have a very strong side. They very narrowly lost their first League game.

The Colts, really an U18 side and not a mixed U18 & U19 team, have had mixed results. Good early League results have been offset by a heavy defeat away at OA’s and a disappointing defeat in the League to Hemel. They are trying to create an atmosphere of excellence and create a team that all youth players aspire to play in, and the recent sponsorship has allowed them to kit out the team with training kit and new pre/post match shirts.

The U14’s have also been very successful in attracting sponsorship and in particular using the website to offer sponsors good opportunities and it is a model that other age groups should aspire to.

I have been encouraged by the feeling around the club this season, and not just from the Juniors but the Seniors and Minis too. The new website has helped put a face to the whole club and the efforts of the coaches, team managers, volunteers and supporters have been testament to a very positive feeling that starts on the pitch but reaches out around the whole club.

I would like to express huge thanks to all who give time and support and my best wishes for the rest of the season to all the players and teams for success!
