Our former goalkeeper Eric Boden had taken over as team manager in the summer of 1946. We began & ended the season well, being unbeaten in our last eleven games. We were now finally playing in the Spartan League Premier division, rewarded for winning pre war promotion in 1939.
The clubs best run yet in the F.A. Cup was achieved. Eventually being knocked out in a 4-3 defeat at Finchley in front of a crowd of 3,200. We had beaten Edgware at the White Lion Ground 2-1 with Jimmy Grant scoring both. In the next round a victory over Wealdstone at home by four goals to three in front of a still record Earlsmead crowd of over 3,000., Hannant, Eden & Shaw (2) scoring. A trip to St Albans followed, winning 5-2 with Bridges, Henderson, Hannant & Shaw(2) scoring to earn the 3rd qualifying round tie at Finchley, where Bridges (2) and Darvell scored in a 4-3 defeat. A final league position of seventh was achieved, we may well of finished much higher , as star man Ron Shaw signed as a professional for Torquay United ( with whom he scored 99 league goals) in the February.. The week after our cup defeat at Finchley we recorded our biggest win of the season, beating Aylesbury United 9-1 at Earlsmead. Blacklock, Bridges, Henderson (2), Shaw, Eden, Evans (2), and Cameron scoring the goals in a match that was watched by the Supporters Club president “wee Georgie Wood” . He was a well-known Comic, Actor & entertainer back in those days.
Ron Shaw top scored with 21 goals despite leaving three months before the end of the season.
Fred Edghill & Denis Russell were selected to play for the Spartan League rep. side.
